RonKZ650 wrote: Top speed back in the old days before 600,000,000 people moved in and ruined all the open roads was probably 120mph. Drag racing about 120 also. I never had an exceptional motorcycle in speed except a 1988 Yamaha FZR1000. This brings up the sub question of what is your worst speeding ticket? I once ran that bike through 3 gears full throttle in a 35mph zone and if memory serves, got clocked at 88 in a 35mph zone. You're getting a reckless driving citation, cop told me, all I could say was "OK".
My worst was way back in 1978 or ’79. The original shocks were worn out and I noticed a bit of wobble at the rear of the bike at a particular spot on an on-ramp to Route 95 (a BIG highway) when I was moving about 45 mph (It’s a long 25 mph curved ramp, but isn’t terribly tight and has no problem with traffic or visibility). I rode this route daily and the wobble was consistent. The weekend came and I installed new Michelin tires with PZ2 racing compound and new S&W shocks. I decided to see how much difference they made. My first pass through the ramp at 45 mph was perfectly steady. So, down the road to the next exit I went and I worked my way back through side roads to the test exit. Next pass was close to 60 mph after the apex – steady as a rock! Now I’m really happy! Down the road to next exit and back to test exit. Now I come roaring around the ramp as fast as I dare push it - accelerating to 75 mph after the apex. Zero wobble – steady as a rock; man, I am elated!! That’s when the State Trooper’s light came on in front of me! Pooo!!! Just my luck, the trooper had parked on the left shoulder of Route 95 about 150 yards past the ramp and set up his radar while I had been traveling from the exit ramp back to the test ramp. I pulled in behind him and walked up to his cruiser. He invited me in. He showed me the radar - 75mph. Now I’m talking fast about how I was ensuring a wobble had been corrected (for safety’s sake), and showing him receipts I had still had in my pockets, and basically begging for mercy. I even told him it was my third pass at the ramp. He asked how fast the next pass was going to be and I assured him that I was quite satisfied with 75 mph and would never actually ride that fast on the ramp except for the sake of science. He could see that I was still dirty from working on the bike, and he knew I was being truthful. He gave me a ticket for exceeding 65 mph – the posted speed on Route 95 at the time, and showed me as traveling at that speed on Route 95 rather than the 25 mph ramp. What a kind, understanding police officer! I’ve had a couple close calls since, but nothing like being nabbed going 50 mph over the limit. Ed

Which is why I said we were young and stupid. The multitude of things that could have gone wrong...it's staggering. And that is an area rife with deer and other wildlife. I'm surprised, some days, that I am even here to talk about these things.
I was referring to myself at 160 mph.
God does look after fools, drunks, and children ... And I was at least two of those things :silly:

nah thats just plain old good luck
Ron 40 km/h over the speed limit here is loss of licence for 6 months and 8 demerit points - we get 11 - fine is probably $1000.
Ed i got pulled up a couple of times many years ago for speeding by a cop i went to school with - all he said was "dont do it again - off you go"

The fun days (rides, games etc) was going on up town at the park and when I went later that night every one had heard about it and I got a ribbing from a bunch of folks. if I remember right my lawyer got 700 bucks for me getting to keep my license with a years probation........ after words it went off my record............ Want to add too that they up graded the cop car soon after from a 63 Impala 283 to a more modern much faster car (forget what it was though) and I heard from a lot of folks they did it cause of me... well and maybe cause of my buddy that did it earlier that year but he got away with it.

On the same bike returning from Ft Lauderdale to Tampa around the same period. After 120, it slowly climbed to 128+ mph on Alligator Alley (I-75 portion crossing the Everglades swamp) Not sure if I hit 130, because the bike induced a death wobble at that speed. Made it through that one.
Early 90's on an FJ1200, out in the farmland outside Windsor Canada near Kingsville near Lake Erie, 155 mph. Did it a few times on that bike in that area. Always worried about some small animal crossing the road at that speed. Hitting 155 mph on the FJ required a fraction of the nerve required on the Z. I think I may have hit a 100 mph on my current KZ. Don't have the nerve to go faster. Probably more scared from getting stopped than anything. Wouldn't mind taking it to the track. But not exactly the ideal bike for that.

I was on a logging road at 25 MPH when a deer (big RAT) came out of the ravine, overtook me, then crossed in front of me just that fast. No time to react. Barely missed that varment. If I'd hit him I'd been SHT out of luck. 20 more miles to go to reach the little podunk town an 5 miles back to the ranch. I hate them critters. I don't even like to eat them.
