In this case I would prefer the "old school" stud remover. You have the advantage of being able to engage the stud down close to the bottom and turn it with an extension and ratchet handle. I just upgraded the studs on my motor this spring and the originals came out with no issues using the Snap-On tool pictured.

Mikaw that "New Version" is mighty handy but won't work/suggested on this application of removal. These have a reduced shaft with the threaded ends being bigger. The size of stud socket required to pinch smooth section won't go over threads, note photo. I always use "Old Version" down low to engine case. The new version should work on assembly of HD studs because they are not reduced shaft. You Will leave a burr on the stud with the old version, i belt sand the burr out before i have them replated.

Guys dang it ya beat me to the joke. I picked up the new version last night and it was very satisfying to tell my son this is time Old school prevails. As you both have mentioned the new style is designed for a stud or bolt to be a consistent diameter. They will slide all the way to the bottom of the stud at the case but to be large enough to pass the threads the are then to large to tighten at the reduced area. The one that fits the reduced diameter won’t open enough to pass over the threads. APE sells an old school version I’ll add to the stud purchase and call it done. Theirs is about $35. Seams reasonable.

I just spoke with Wiseco. Tom, gave me specs for the piston. If I mic it out and determine its the piston we think it is (older P series)Tom says I could buy one new current piston 4020MO7000 and run it with the other 3 older P series. If anyone needs the measurements pm and I’ll reply.

The new ones are a lot lighter than the old style. I didn't do it for that reason.
