All right I did the new member thing. Now lets get into this beauty. I am a chop guy and this will be a full rebuild of engine and frame mods fiberglass rear and total paint. Got it and she was fast around the block once! now she's tore down. I'm into the carbs pulled them and started washing off engine. half the paint came off with a HF electric power washer. Hope to pull motor by next week and start on chassis. The rear was designed by and idiot because its solid due to the triangle jam its in. I am thinking air bag. Its as though a great builder did 85% and the owner ran out of cash and then some local car guy had his mongrel hands on her after that.The electrical had 3 splices per foot and duct tape no solder. The girder, the stance, and the frame look good( will blast frame to bare metal to check). some pics to start this now.

Thats a cool trike KZQ ! I am just extreme, heres a pic of my shovel so you get more of my taste.I don't have any good pics of her finished.Excuse the shit in the back I was moving the basement all around and doing some wiring.

That's a dramatic looking machine ShankKole,
Unfortunately the roads here in Oregon aren't in good enough shape for me to ride over with that rear end.
How does an extended front end like that handle? I often judge the geometry of a front end by how much force I have to put into the bars to hold the front end up while in a turn. An old Schwin bicycle or perhaps an old Triumph Trophy have the best frame geometry, meaning that it may take effort to move the bars but none is required to hold them in any given position.
What sort of rear end does your trike have? Mine's a DNA brand which is a Chinese knock off of a chain drive Harley Servi-car. It's a true chain drive differential with disk brakes. It actually works quite well. You can see it in action here:

Ha... how the shovel handles well,the deal is the trail which most stock bikes are 3-6 inches and that is at 9 in the pic.With the bars on a hard angle they turn into a lever which here decreases force needed to steer. Trail as draw a line straight through the neck and level line down from center of axle( for those who don't know) Now it handles effortlessly straight and stable when cooking down freeway ( baker 6 spd in 4 spd case helps the old tractor get to that speed)and slow pimp when turning ( you drive it like what it is, folk art when slow and freedom when fast) That California long bike look from the 70s was when guys were CRANKED up and driving states away for the hell of it to party and fight. Got a tired old road king for comfort till the trike is doing wheelies with a gel seat !! I am no timid soul who cares if others like my ride, but truly appreciate shared knowledge and will try to share info and build details that may help others. Here is where some big handed mofo tightened the band clamp too tight. it tapped it out with a 1 inch hickory dowel and hammer.Then sanded the face flat with 400 grit paper laying on a hard flat surface rotating a quarter turn every pull across until flat then smoothed the edges.You can see the difference between stage 1 and 2 of cleaning.

I for 1 am very interested in your build, particularly your frame and duo down tubes area . I have a motor I'm wanting to build as I'm just now reading up for a shopping list. Im assuming hd bearings, welded crank and Ape setup and cut transmission for pushing that much bike, It would be great to follow your build if you choose to document with lots of pics!! Im also contemplating a moto gadget m unit for wiring on my 3rd build .

Im not much of a fan of trikes but yours has great...proportions I guess is the word. Id like to see details on the frame.

I built this 76 FX back in my twenties (late 90s) from custom parts and mid 50s FL stuff. I modified every part on it in one way or another.

Nice trike and chopper!

I only ride standard bikes, but I really dig seeing old choppers. I think people have to realize it's a totally different machine for a different purpose.

I think "folk-art" really nails it. My buddy's Amen Savior has an amazing hand-painted scene. Since he's had it for 20 years (had to lift it out of a mud pit using jacks when he first got it), I don't think I've seen more than 1 or 2 other similar bikes that were from back in the day.

Nice shovel Kawie ! thanks for the compliments as well everyone.I got one carb close to ready for sonic cleaning, guess which one? man these castings are rough they won't get as shiny as some parts but they are closer to cool !

I don't know how this thing ran ! compression at 110-90-125-120. We shall see inside next week.A lot of questions on the rear end from all so, its a 1951 harley servi rear end, flipped I just have noticed. So I have drain holes facing up, no good but can be addressed. The swingarm is modeled after the servi swingarm then welded to what I assume is a cut up original kawi mount.Some pics

I have a basic trike question. Why car tires in the back? It seems to me that compared to a pair of stock wheels and tires, that those tires add a lot of unsprung weight and a lot of rolling resistance. I suppose there is also added aerodynamic resistance. Is there any advantage?
I have always suspected that it was an esthetic choice, but one that I would not choose.

Good Question
Looks Im sure are at the top of the reasons why.
Plus , but not needed Weight carrying increased capacity
Stability increased
Negative More unsprung weight as you noted
More rolling resistance Need more power.
More mass to stop , Bigger brakes needed
But I do Love the look

The harley servi-car trike was designed to be a tow truck delivery type of thing so the standard car tire width was added as they designed them to haul other things not just their own weight. Then people like me do crazy shit that pushes the limit, but to me if it aint custom its crap.(restored IS custom because its built not bought)hand inspected parts, love. As for the tire weigh,t yup they are heavy on the ride. I have to add a strong chain tensioner and may have to upgrade clutch springs at the least if I want to pull out in traffic swiftly. Its mostly a dragster look and remember everyone ,lots of different bikes for lots of uses. I feel too many people try the this or that argument with everything, get more than one and you have choices. Happy Bike Mad bike fast bike cool bike ( they all cool ) but no real performance from my size tires for sure. The harley rear is the weak link, it will give in before this engine does I bet, hopefully when I'm still able to rebuild it one last time.
