Dayum that's a pretty engine there R!

You're builds are gratifying to watch because you do them so well. Can hardly wait to see this beast assembled!

Thanks. I am good at following directions and patient. That goes a long way at engine work. I am getting somethings back together on the chassis. Cleaned up wire loom and will hit all connections with Deoxit. I put some paint on the valve cover. The paint is semi-gloss so it should look okay with the engine. Paint there is good, I did a few touch ups on the cases, but really the head and the block were fine for me. It would be nice to paint it all but I am lazy when it comes to painting. I am out of town a lot this week. The parts should all be here when I return. The truck is coming for the 550 tomorrow.

A few pics.

R

I am at the point where cases are back together. In the manual it says to check tranny gears that all can be selected.

It was in neutral when put back together. I can go from neutral to first, but can't get any other up gears by hand.

When I put the cases together the single fork on the drum was not in place. I fit it on the drum after looking a bit and gently pressing to see what was hung up.

Could I have bent the fork? No case bolts where in and all three of the forks do not seem to be in a bind.

Perhaps It won't go by hand?

Also I think I can pull the drum and reset/inspect the fork with out splitting again?

What says ye?

Also I did not remove the drum when splitting. I did remove and clean the two forks on the shaft. But it is puzzling to get neutral and first and no other gears. Any input appreciated. R

The countershaft has to be turning to get into 2nd gear. I put it together upside down. That way you can see what's going on. Check it out.

That's normal. After 1977 Kawasaki's had what was referred to as a "neutral finder." The tranny cannot be shifted into 2nd gear or above unless the output shaft is spinning. The 3 little balls in the diagram below are the telltale. Ed
