Re: Help on a question of "to polish" or "to not polis
09 Jan 2013 01:15 - 09 Jan 2013 01:25
I'm deciding what to do with the side covers on the engine.
I can polish them, or I can use a sanding disk and give them a more machined, unfinished look.
Comments?
I can always do more buffing, or roughing it to make it a smooth satin, or rough like this.
This one is more satin, with a 600 grit sand paper
This one shows a combination of sample one at the top, and just polish shiny

love bikes, and anything with a engine/motor, and i love the ride way more than the destination, unless I have a passenger, then that's all that matters.

Finally after a few months, I'm able to get working. I put the motor in , and the handlebars, Gauges, and Headlight.
Sounds simple, but holy cabolie...the stupid bolts for the gauges broke in place. I had to drill them both out.
Which was OK really because I used 8mm bolts, with nuts on the bottom...and all the bolts on top are now all identical.
I had trouble with the little rubber pieces in the gauge cluster, so I got some of that soft pad material like you would put under the table legs or chair legs to keep them from scratching, and used that instead of the rubber, and it' worked great.
so I went back to the Bluedot headlight for this build, and New brake lever and master, so now I have to find a clutch perch and lever to match.
I decided to do a fine brushed look to the side covers, and I'l get to it as soon as I can.

very nice dub..looks like a 2009 or 2010.
Every year they make it better and better. Mine is a 2011 TDI, and I can't wait till the next one.
I had a local guy do the seat, and he did it all for less than $250.

Another update.
I've been working on the hand controls, and dash area. I finally got 95% there.
I cleaned the gauges as good as I could without opening them up, which I dont want to do, I'd rather cut off my pinky finger that mess with that silly little crimped ring.
I want to find a way to make one that people can use over and over. I have some ideas, and may experiment.
So question to you all, should I paint the brake reservoir black? or leave it silver, or powdercoat it....I realized today that Testors paint sticks to plastic like nothing else because it has a chemical that chemically bonds with it instead of just finding a rough surface to stick to.
I think the bar end mirrors work in this case, and they're not too bad, Bike Masters, so it's easy to find replacements, works ok, and isn't too heavy or complex. I only wish that the mirrors from Bike Master and their grips worked better together. The grip on the throttle side has rubber around the end, and when you have the bar end mirrors on, the throttle is way too sticky....
believe it or not those switches are 100% original, I just cleaned and painted them.
My idea for the tank and paint comes from here: no pinstripes though.
So the paint scheme on the tank will look similar to this.

here are some more pic of the painted parts...step one.
this is the silver base.
this is a sample of what we're going for, but a dark candy green, with a pattern under the green

Whole bike looks totally awesome- the only thing I would add is to get rid of the couch-seat and delete the rear fender, and it is AWESOME!
1975 Z1 B 900- soon to be heavily modded
Pahoa, Hawaii is my new hom
I am working hard to save up the shipping money to get my shop opened here in Hawaii
I hate electrical stuff.
