one warning though, dont even touch, let alone mount, an old magnesium wheel, the alloy ages really badly and age cracks.
try to find the aluminum version (marvic do them new in Al too)

I'm assuming you mean the new Morris mags on ebay? I hadn't thought about the aging with the older mags, that is definitely a problem with magnesium, it oxidizes very rapidly.
I'm going to ping Marvic and get a quote.

mtbspeedfreak wrote: Thanks Mark, I do appreciate your advice. I hope I don't sound cynical in my past or future replies, I genuinely appreciate [and NEED] advice from folks like you, Larry, wireman, turboguzzi, etc., I have a dry and/or sarcastic/smartass sense of humor at times.
I know I can't build this bike, the right way, for 8 grand; everything is a trade off though. A nice crank, set of rods, and cams are justified way of spending $3,500; that Dormei/Yosh 4-4 superbike replica exhaust system is not a justified way of spending $3,500 at this point. Who knows what'll happen when I win the lottery next week.
Regarding rim size, the Yosh race bikes ran the standard 19"/18" combination, in cast magnesium of course. Since I can't find any cast magnesium wheels and likely couldn't afford them even if I knew where a dozen sets were, I'm planning on using the standard mag wheels.
Though, I'm very strongly considering using a stock front Z1R 18" wheel, but that won't be true to form. Additionally, I just got off the horn with Kosman, I'm considering getting a rear wheel widened so I can fit a 140-150 rear in it.
All this being said, I'm heading to Norway on Sunday for three weeks. I'm disconnecting work email from my phone and won't be bringing a laptop - this will be my first TRUE vacation, I am very much looking forward to it!!!
Norway.... now that's a vacation Have a great time!! We can pick up this ball busting when you return

Not much to add other than I saw a craig's list ad I couldn't pass up: "One of two motors built by Kerry Andrews for Eddie Lawson in his last season as a privateer before he got a full ride from Kawasaki." Sold!!! Thanks to Tri for pointing that out!
That should take care of the motor issues for awhile at least. It's sitting in my garage, but unfortunately I won't be able to tear it down until January. I'll post some pictures, as well as any specs I come across - I'm sure I'll have questions regarding IDing engine components: cams, compression, etc.
The jugs read 1015, the head is ported, etc. It's not a 100% correct Z1 motor, but apparently the cases are Z1 cases due to some webbing or something in the bottom case. No VIN stamped into the pad because the cases were ordered separate from the bike.
The guy I bought it from lent it to a buddy of his a few years back who ran it on the street for a bit. He took it out because "it scared the shit out of him and he thought he would kill himself with it." I'm hoping for 125+ hp, a close ratio transmission, and a decent porting job! It didn't come with any covers, so I can't even see if the valve cover was ground down for cam clearance, but it does come with some USA-made cams - no "Pop Y" cast into them.
Apparently Kerry Andrews doesn't live too far away from me either - might have to pay him a visit
