I dont think that there is a close ratio gearset in that engine as the kickstarter shaft is still in place. I have a close ratio gearset that I used a little in the mid eighties and IIRC you had to remove the kickstarter-shaft because the gear on it didnt match the new gears.
I remember the close ratio gearset wasnt very fun on the street as 1:st gear ratio was about the same as the stockers 2:nd gear and fifth gear was about midway between the stockers 4:th and 5:th.

First time I have seen this thread. It was a good read. I cant imagine building this bike an using stock the wheels. My vote would be get those vintage race wheels hands down and race brakes if it possible to find them.

If you hunt ebay at times you can find the vintage wheels for a good price. The guy I bought my bimota kit from had a set of OZ's that ended up going for 800.00. I stopped biding at 600.

Haha naw I'm still around. I'm in the middle of job hunting - I'll likely be moving halfway across the country.

I've been putting a lot of thought into this project lately though - it'll be completed someday! B)

You may be moving away Mark? How long do I have left to take advantage of your assistance with my poor, lagging project? :woohoo:

Now I understand where some of the contributors of this forum comment about the amount of unfinished bike builds.

I just read MTBs Prudhoe adventure- what he didn't know was that I had several coils for him, in Anchorage, and have picked up bikes on the Dalton before LOL. I am on advrider as Cruisingram as well, BTW. I could have had a friend drop off the coils to him right in deadhorse if needed!

Very interesting and informative thread. I have been reading every post with great interest. I really am going to try to put my old 1979 vintage Kz1000 MK II Superbike back together in the near future. I love seeing the old 1015cc Yosh slipper pistons again. I ran them all the time back in the day. My MK II was also street legal so I put many a street mile on it. I put over four years of racing and street miles on one set of pistons. I would rering it and freshen up the head about 2 or 3 times a year. Or after I missed a few gears big time!!! At this time I don't know if I will put my 1015cc Yoshimura slippere piston motor back together, or my 1105cc Moriwaki piston motor together.

I hope I am not hijacking this thread or if I should have started another one instead. I need a few questions answered on my basic chassis to start. I have a set of 35 year old Morris magnesium wheels on my bike. A 2.50X19 front, and a 3.50X18 rear. Is it even safe to race, or even ride on these wheels??? Back when I built my Superbike, the 19" front was the way to go. Thanks to this listing I saw the Marrvic Vintage "Morris" copies. If I did my Euro to Dollar conversion right, the rear 4.00X18 is like 1,306.00 dollars!!!! 2,500 bucks in new wheels plus going to a 18" front is a little over my budget. What do most people do, stay with their 35 year old wheels, or bite the big one for 2,500.00 bucks for new wheels??? I heard that Avon are the tires of choice for vintage racing. Only thing I can find is a AM18 100/90-19 front, and the soft compound is the A53. Rear is a AM23 150/70VB-18 that is close to what I last ran on my bike back in 1985. I ran a Michelin Hi-Sport on the rear with some kind of a treaded Michelin intermediate 19" inch front.

Motorwise I got a few questions too, but I got to put the rolling chassis together first. Now if I can lose 50 pounds or so and get back into my old leathers. I would like to do some vintage AHRMA racing too!!!

would start a new thread if i was you, so no tto kidnapp.

wouldnt race on old magnesiums unless you X-ray them (with your Gamma rays :) ) and even then they simply age crack. AHRMA doesnt care so much for period correct rim sizes, so you could run 17", though they are out of place on a Zee IMHO. 18" rims off early GSXR's are an option.
but 17" race rubber gives endless choice. for 18" the Avon set is the AM22 front and the AM23 or AM26 rears www.avonmotorsport.com/historic-tyres-range/motorcycle
dunlop has always the KR164
the new kids on the block are the continental road attack CR (Classic Racing) 18"'s. look them up.

turbo is right

just pick a name for your project and start it's own thread....gammas dusted off racer.....etc...and daydream and ask questions there...posting pics and ideas,,,,use that thread as the platform to gather info while whetting the stone with a pic now and again to get new readers the idea of your bikes direction...then when you start spinning wrenches or /swapping/trading/begging/buying folks will follow along...and all your previous questions and links will be in one place for easy reference.....you can click your avatar anytime you log back in and find threads you chatted on and the main thread your project runs in....
