r we seeing 37.5mm and 31 mm valve sizes? stock would be 36, 30. they dont usually bother increasing the exht valve size these days. they found that the exhst flows fine at 30mm.
u will want to check the valve to valve and v to p clearance before u take it all apart.
now would be the best time to put the head and cams back on and check out the cam specs. and all of these most important clearances.

Thanks for the advice Mark! I don't believe the motor came with a cam chain - I'd need to get one, as well as a degree wheel to set the timing, in order to check these clearances, correct?

My plans are to strip it down to the bare cases then bead blast them, the cylinders, and head before reassembling.

the crank has to come out to get the cam chain out. so i would think the chain is in there. could it be wrapped around the crank? looking at the pic,it looks to me like it is in there.

u only need the degree wheel to spec out the cams. u may be able to find the specs by researching the stampings on the cams. u can check all of the important measurements with plastercine or solder, and your vernier.
it looks like the intake valves hit the pistons at some time. u may want to check the valve stems for run out.

it would be wise to do the measuring now. then u can move forward with research and parts while u have it apart to clean, blast, and paint.

Chains can always be split. I would be more interested in the "why", though, if it is indeed missing.

It's there. When I pulled the head, I saw a folded up cam chain in the valley. I haven't fished it out though.

You were correct, it's down there folded up - I need to fish it out. I'll be sure to get a degree wheel soon, I'm headed back to PA for 2 weeks for Christmas so I'll catch up on this when I return.
