I need some people as sounding boards for work that I have already done. I bought the universal DCC upper shock mounts, milled them to fit a tight radius to the frame tube, prepped the tube and burned them in. I have a good weld, but I am starting to wonder if I should lop them off and weld them in another way? Weld a stud to the back of them, drill a hole through the frame, slide them through and reburn them in on the outside like before, but weld the end of the stud to the inside tube? I could rill through the tube, into the mount and drill & tap them, then use a bolt? Am I over thinking this? Leon? Les?

man i do not think that there is any way(short of a GOD FORBID crash)that you could ever bend or break them off.

sounds like to much desk time and not enough shop time :laugh: .
you were confident enough to weld the damn things on :whistle: ,now move on to the next step :silly: .
while looking at them originally i never once thought that you would have any kind of problem with your work.

i'm gonna have to look back and check on that :silly: .
you would have to rip the side outta the tube for it to fail the way you coped it,and welded it in.
being that close to the tube junction lends alot of support to that area also.

The following post may be helpful with regard to support for holes drilled through frame tubes.

If I was going to drill the frame, I'd make a boss (a thick walled tube that extends through the frame) and braze it to both sides. That would provide strength and support to the frame and keep the hole from cracking. Like the right front engine mount plate bolt holes.
Brazing a mount to the frame would be better, if you can figure out how to move the crash bars mount a little.
Tig welding would probably be better than brazing, but the equipment is more expensive and it requires more skill.

Thanks for the input. I am going forward with the way it is now, and will probable ad a small gusset that will tie it into the frame gusset I wleded in above it. It will be in direct line with the force vector that is be applied through the upper shock mount.

Just everything sitting in place....
I went to a local supplier for muscle car/ vintage car rubber products (Metro Molded Products) and they carry in their show room a bunch of misc bushings, etc.. I found some for my exhaust hanger and the gauges. Made some of these that will bolt through the stock handle bar riser holes in the triple, and hold my gauge bushings and guages in place. Works fantastic and I love the position they are in. Not nearly as high as stock.
I made tabs for the license plate and decided to add a gusset as well.
Here is how it sat the end of the day...
