Its an 84model, and it runs well I must say! :laugh:
The preowner bought it on Ebay Germany... So he went over and bought it and drove it home.
Then he fired up the wiring harness, and I bought it...

I am puting things together to restore my '73 Z1. It has some broken head fins. I will replace it with another one I got on E-Bay. I used a degreaser and some soap to get it clean and ready for paint but I am not satisfied yet because it shows no grease but some surface kind of dirt or scale holds up real tough on hard to get at crevices. Looking at your "before" pictures on your bike I am sure you dealt with this problem ??

As you might know the engine on the Z1 is painted black. In order for me to paint the head and repaint the rest of the engine, it has to be real clean.

My question is: how did you accomplished that ?? what products/procedures were used ?? media blast ?? what kind of media .. or wathever ??

Thanks for your interest for my project!

Well, I sandblast, using brown ordinary sand 0.2mm-0.7 mm,
Thats what I have found out suits me best, since I Gun-Kote everything after blasting.
Also that sand is very "soft", so it does not damage the soft metal. ( Thats my opinion since these engines and covers are painted from factory)
I like to do it proper, then I know the paint will hold on for a while...

Its not easy for me to advice you what to do, because if you sandblast you need to tear the head apart totally, and thats a little labour involved...
I have used steelbrush on a drill earlier, removing old corrosion, but not any solution for me...
So its up to you how much you want to do...when you starts to do it proper it never ends...so I have learned to rip everything apart and slowly built it up again...

Here is one head almost done blasting...

So, some pics from what I done today.

Banging out the old bearing.

Using the old one as a socket when I install the new.

Heating up the new bearing before installing.

Using a pipe and hammering gently the bearing down with a hammer.

Done!

Getting closer now!

Also started on the engine.

Hey Roy, thanks for your comments... I am trying to get Sodium Bicarbonate (aka) baking soda; I know it is used on softer metals, used to polish dull mouldings on old cars, and also to blast fiberglass panels like on Corvettes and such, ... besides it is very cheap around here at 6 cents per kilogram.
One other thing I can see right now you are online .. it is 14:29 Central Mexico Time.
