Oh. I almost forgot. Brett, you asked about the paint and if they have high temp versions?
I looked and only see they carry POR products for high temp (ie: not in the Spray Max cans). However, you can look for yourself to see if anything looks of interest here:

The web site is pretty easy to navigate and they shipped fast.

The only one you'll have trouble with is the one behind the points cover. You have to split the cases to get to that one. You can tale out the bolts and pry the case open just enough to slide it out. The rest go in from the inside of the covers. I'd take out the clutch plates, wash them in diesel, then put them back in.

Would be a good idea to replace the springs for the clutch while you have it apart..... a lot prefer NOS ..... I like Barnett's ..... I need to read the manual more Steve.... I didn't split the case when I did my motor and figured the majority of the seals couldn't be replaced unless you did..... since the motor is on my bench for a bit yet I'm gonna look into it.... hopefully I can live without replacing the one behind the points cover for now............... am interested on seeing how many cans of blue you use for the panels and tank too Wrench when you get to that point.

Being it's on the bench, it would be a good idea. On the large fours the housing comes off. I just replaced mine after 40 years. :lol:

Good point. I meant to tell how many cans i've been using as a reference. I used 1.5 cans of primer on the frame with full coverage.
I expect to finish the 2nd can of primer on the few frame elements i have left to do.
Also, as i will be painting tank, sides, rear ducktail, front fender, headlamp bucket & dial bodies, i expect 2 cans of blue & 2 cans of clear based on my son's results on his HD 883 job.

Here's my seals:

Off the top of my head (and I could be wrong, it has happened :whistle: ) :

1: Output shaft seal, sitting in the mission cover.

2 and 3: Crankshaft end seals. If so, they should have a ridge around the outside that fits into a groove in the crankcase halves.
Unlike the rest you need to split the cases to replace these (and also remove the flywheel/rotor from the crank to replace the left one). They are not the same, so take note of which goes where.

4: Kickstart shaft seal, sitting in the clutch cover.

5, 6 and 7: Gearshift lever shaft, one seal in the mission cover and two in the sprocket cover, one on the outside facing out and one on the inside facing in. (Edited per Steve's post below).

8: Clutch pushrod seal, sitting in the mission cover.

9: Tach drive seal


As mentioned, I could be wrong but at least it should give you somewhere to start.

There are two in the sprocket cover. One on the outside facing out and one on the inside facing in. The other goes to the tranny cover over the shift linkage. Three in all.

You're right Steve, there are indeed two seals in the sprocket cover as you say, never noticed the inside one.

That accounts for the third seal, I edited my post above accordingly, thanks.

They are there more for support than sealing.

Yeah, guess the two in the sprocket cover should be called bushings rather than seals.

Mine were worn out for years. Finally replaced them. Now I have a different cover. Lucky they are in good shape. Have to destroy them to get them out. :dry:
