You need to find a hex head bolt with the same thread. I know on my bike, the chrome bolt that goes through the top of the steering stem also fit.

I have a spare steering stem bolt lying around, I will try that out if my bearing puller doesn't work. If I end up getting a flywheel puller from princess auto, would I clamp the hooks around the "bell" portion of the rotor, or onto the starter gear?

OK, If I borrow an impact gun and hook it to my compressor I don't think I can get it connected to my axle as it has the round end (no nut end to hook a socket to) I have a blind hole bearing puller that I could try. THis poor motor has been through so much...I took the pistons off and 2 of the 4 skirts were shattered and missing pieces.

don't think I can get it connected to my axle as it has the round end (no nut end to hook a socket to) --- doesn't it have flats or perhaps a hole through it?

Shouldn't have to use a pipe wrench. :pinch:

Good Fortune! :)

It does have a hole through it, but how would that connect to an impact gun?

I love how I have managed to get a thread about pulling my alternator off into a solid 2 pages! lol I suck

Don't use impact gun on steel dowel, screwdriver shank or whatever is being used inside hole to tighten the bolt head.

Just hold crankshaft in position by applying rear brake with transmission in gear.

Could also use an oil filter wrench or other type strap wrench to hold the rotor in position while tightening the bolt.

Not rocket science.

The motor in question is apart from the bike, no?

It's the one in the OP. But now the pistons and studs are off.

Gong! Earth to Patton. :woohoo:
Forget the brake pedal.

May be feasible to lock the countershaft sprocket instead.

I will heat it up and use my bearing puller tonight, if that doesn't work I will hed into town tommorow and get a flywheel puller from PA. Would I hook onto the gear or the rotor itself with the flywheel puller?

9am53, I had the exact same problem that you are having. My rotor had spun and was galled on the crank. It was quite stuck. I fought with it for a good two hours trying the same methods as you already have. Then it struck me. "You own an impact gun, numbnuts, give it a shot." So I did, and as I said it worked, 5 sec. With the impact, you don't need to worry about locking the crank so it won't turn. It's all a matter of physics. The impact works so fast that it turns the bolt before it can overcome the inertia necessary to turn the crankshaft. It's the same reason that you can loosen lugnuts with the tires in the air. Try that trick with hand tools = no go.

hmmm, a cheap reternable impact gun costs less than a flywheel puller at PA...how much torque you figure I need? 250 pounds?

Yeah that should work. I really like this idea better. I have had some bad experiences with flywheel/gear pullers. I tried a gear puller once on an evinrude flywheel b/c i didn't have the right tool. I managed to break a chunk out of that flywheel and still didn't get it out. Plus the impact gun has many uses. Flywheel puller, not so much.

i use a bolt out of a harmonic balancer puller set.
thread it in till it touches then a couple seconds with a impact gun and it pops right off.
you can rent a puller from a local auto parts store and then just bribe some guy $5 at a garage to tighten the bolt for you.

one like this.

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.
