Wookie, German carbs are totally different. I’ve now located a set that is missing some parts that I already have (floats, bowls), so it should be cheap. Let’s see.

So I take it you didn't try with reverse drill bits. That and a little heat might have done it. I hate "easy outs" for the reason shown here. They dig in and expand the material being removed. These carbs were used on many bikes and minor changes were being made. I looked up yours and a few came up for a reasonable price but some are listed as if they were made of GOLD. 
Aside from the tops they look very much like the ones I just did.

While Jim and I sort the carb deal, that have to make their way across the pond to Spain, I´m working on all the tiny little parts that are both time-consuming and a pleasure to deal with. Shocks in, forks in, brakes are in (all parts renewed, waiting for fluid and bleeding), front and rear mudguards... etc.

I wanted to show my nephew how the bike will look like, so I got the painted tank and reupholstered seat out, and just got them on top of the bike. 

I have to say I am shocked of how good looking this bike will be once it´s done. Just some pics to share my hapiness...

 

A little update since last time. Things have slowed a bit as I am waiting for the carbs to come over from the us. Latest by October they should be here (someone will bring them, so o don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for customs).

in the meantime, some things have been advancing. This is the way things stand today, with brakes and mostly electrics set up already.

All is needed, really is the carbs, so I can finally start her up!

There are a couple of parts I cannot figure out where they were or where they are going. One is a pair of weird shaped rubber parts; the other is a strange contraption. Posting pics in case someone can help.

last but not least; the rear master cylinder is leaking, despite new internals. Is there a modern replacement part for it?

Well... I finally got my blinkers working. I was missing an earth cable in the rear indicators. 

I still have no horns. It seems as if I dont have an earth. I`ve been searching the archives and it seems that earth comes from the handlebar switch. I have current to the horns if I ground them against the frame, but the horn button makes no difference.

Still have no idea how to install the side stand switch. Engine will not turn if disconnected, and I still dont know where the weird part goes (i believe its related to the side stand switch... but cannot find a way to install it!).

Carbs should arrive beginning of october. Hope to get some speed again then!

Carlos do you know the origin of your bike (I couldn't find the side stand switch on the wiring diagram and mine doesn't have it, or the mounting on the frame behind the kick stand ?) I seem to remember from an early road test article that there was a reference to the bike cutting out when lifted off the stand if a "handlebar switch" wasn't activated ???

Wookie, the bike's origin is shady. It seems to be an american import, as the model was not sold in Spain. 

I spent some time last night looking at the misterious part, and where could it fit, and for a moment, I even thought about the center stand, as the side stand is quite far away from that location, and makes no sense. However, could not figure out how would that part be installed in the bike, the sensor itself, or even connected to the center stand.

I have pretty much decided to just hide the side/center/whatever sensor in the cable loom, and forget about it, as the bike seems to give good spark and turns without installing the sensor anywhere (but keeping it connected). 

Another different story is the left handlebar switch. The only thing missing in electrics now is the horns, that don't have an earth, and don't work. Have been fiddling with the switch, but cannot find a way to dissassemble it completely. Wondering if just changing it for a gpz400 switch (identical to kz1000ltd switch, except for the mystery button), or source one from the US. I just found one on ebay for 30 bucks that could join the carbs on the way across the pond.

For your horn, check to make sure there is a good ground to the button from the handlebar.

Thank you for the tip. This is one of my problems. I cannot see/find which one is the groudn. Don´t know how to open the switch enough to be able to see the ground.
