Theres 11 clips around the perimeter, looks like you pry them up gently
Heres the top, like I said its pretty much perfect
And heres the disreputable trim

I think I'd leave it alone and mask it for paint.

Yeah, yours looks like all the normal upholstery I've ever seen Peter. That is the cover is an inch or two bigger that the pan so you fold it over and fix it to the base with grabby things like hooks or staples/tacks if you were working on a chair seat. If you look close enough at mine the seat cover appears to be cut precisely so theres only enough pleather to fold over the edge of the pan and then get squeesed by the trim bit.
The closer I look the more scared I get of pulling that trim off. It's a long winter, I think I'll pass a few days picking all the clear peeling bits off and sanding whatever paint is left off.

You can take it to an auto upholstery shop & see if they have some trim that they could attach

I started masking the trim off to get ready to clean it up.
The colours are a bit wonky in the pic but there is a (used to be) clear plastic coating that is quite brittle and is flaking off in places. I can pick off bits with a fingernail where its really flakey but in other places its stuck on pretty good. Underneath that is a coat of silver paint that peeled of in places but mostly intact. Underneath that is white plastic that seems quite soft. It would have to be to do all the bends and twists it does to go around the seat.
I'm thinking anything chemical I use that can remove the paint might not be good for the white plastic and inevitably some will get past the masking tape possibly eating the pleather seat cover material.
Anything mechanical sufficient to get the paint off and I'm at risk of sculpting the white plastic which I dont want to do.
Any advice from the KZR hive mind would be appreciated.

They have trim at AZ, OR, Pep Boys, etc. Taking off the old might ruin what you have. I'd paint it and live with it.

I wish my seat looked as good as this when I turned 40 years old.

It's crazy that I can still work outside (for short periods) at this time of year. Bobbed my front fender, I had an 82 KZ550 LTD fender laying around to trace the curves from. Turned out pretty good I think. So good I'm surprised that it was me that did it. Now I'm trying to decide whether to keep it chrome or powder coat it satin black to match the forks.
