I remember them. Pintos had studs sticking out of the pumpkins on the rear ends cutting open the gas tanks in rear end crashes. Chevy had side saddle gas tanks outside the frames that would rupture in side crashes. Both companies just paid out the claims instead of fixing the problems as a lot of companies still do. Lexus comes to mind.

It's been going on for a long time. It was wrong to set up the crash but GM still sold the trucks in question. Just worked on one and my grandpa had a step side with those tanks. They're still on the road.

That gasser is pretty bad ass - but it is highly customized and specialized car to beat the Tesla which is basically stock. A 9.4 second car from the factory is crazier to me.
Dragtimes.com has a you tube channel - dude regularly drag races a Tesla Plaid. This video has back to back racing from about the 2:20 point on. The craziest race to me was the Porshe Turbo S getting beaten by the Tesla SUV with 6 people in it! 6 people! thats like an additional 800+ pounds!
Personally I wouldn't want a Tesla but the performance is undeniable.

Do you think that Tesla will be around in 60 years. Good ol’ Detroit iron is, and still kicking ass. Tesla’s range from $47,000 to $139,000, with nine models. That makes the average price about 82,000. I doubt there is 82k in the gasser and it kicked that Tesla’s ass. The Tesla left first and the chevy II ran him down, with a bucket load more of style.
Again I’m not against EV’s. Just let the market work itself out. I’d like to drive one, doubt I’ll ever own one. I just finished an interior buildout, and the lady working next door drove an EV, she lived In the same neighborhood, I guess it makes sense for short distance commutes. I could hear her pull up, sounded like the Jetsons. Because the car is basically silent they added sound effects. Making it sound like a futuristic flying machine wouldn’t be my first choice.

Re: EV's
28 Sep 2022 21:22 - 28 Sep 2022 22:01that is a fallacious argument. There is no way to know what people will think of cars or if we will even be driving them in 60 years. What if there is nostalgia for the Tesla Plaid in 60 years and someone makes dedicated drag racer? There is no possible way to know and therefore a pointless argument. A perfect example of this would be the bikes we all love here. In the nineties if you told someone the original z1 would sell for 5 figures they would laugh in your face....yet here we are.Do you think that Tesla will be around in 60 years. Good ol’ Detroit iron is, and still kicking ass. Tesla’s range from $47,000 to $139,000, with nine models. That makes the average price about 82,000. We're talking low 9 second muscle car - that means around 1000 horsepower. I am skeptical that anything is stock in that gasser other than the body so can you really make the 60 year claim?
Comparing a stock car to a highly specialized race car doesn't make sense.
As far as cost, when you factor in how much the car cost, the tools and shop necessary to build it and factor in that person likely has another car they daily drive, or a trailer for the race car, and a tow vehicle, it very well could be close to the cost of the Tesla if not more. (130k for Plaid) No way to know in this instance therefore pointless to argue.
Everyone likes different things. Some people want to buy a turn key 9 second car they can daily drive, some people want to build a dedicated 9 drag racer. Is every tool in your tool box a hammer?
In regards to style - I agree - not for me. But from a tech standpoint it's truly impressive. The entire front sub frame is die cast on those cars on the worlds largest die casting press. That alone makes them remarkable in my eyes.
Its possible to appreciate EVs while simultaneously disliking them.

I relate the
The tesla is a microwave its the future and its faster than the old ways
The Gasser is an open flame its archaic and thats the way anyone with sense wants to have a steak cooked!
I would like to bring up heat....... its a by product of gas vehicles
Which helps a lot here in Michigan, come November. Batteries suck a lot of charge to make heat.
I will say any battery powered drill will last half the run time once its 20 or so.
I see a fully charged electric car thats is sits cold in ann arbor parking structure in February for 8 hours..................... being dead before your warm or home.

Ok, since my guestion on longevity was poo pooped, here’s maybe a more relevant question. The new concept Dodge Charger EV has had ICE engine sounds incorporated into it.
1) Is it because the EV needs to be as much like a ICE vehicle to sell?
2) Can the EV stand on its own and the sound effects just add to the appeal?
