It absolutely is a consideration Mark. The Chinese cap I referenced has a vent built into the cap ala stock Kz cap ;)

I thought about a stock fuel cap, but the reality is it would be significantly more difficult to pull off. The stock cap requires a hinge and latch point on the tank which would need to be steel. That would mean manufacturing new hardware and laminating it in place. This would necessitate a special, rather complex mold that I'm not sure how I would make. Sure Craig, the stock cap would look cool. But the bottom line is I am not capable of that complexity yet. Soooooooo, I'm taking the easy way out. The turdpuncher way :P

Ya, the easy way out, thats why you're making a custom carbon fiber tank. Because it's easy.

The stock cap would look cool but I think it would look better with a flush filler cap. It would just blend in and not draw attention away from the c-f.

I saw that Kayak in another video. That finish is fiberglass matt, then a CF layer over it. I like that finish. Those boats weigh less then 26 lbs.

In that other video the guy had a cool dye grinder. It had a little "Saw Table" for trimming stuff.

As exciting as the main parts of the tank are, there are a couple of less glamorous pieces that require molding as well. That would be....you guessed it, the tank mounts :silly: Some of you may remember that I had to cut off 14 spot welds to remove 3 parts. In order to mold from these brackets, I needed to fill in the holes left by the cutter.

I put masking tape on the back of the holes to make a floor, allowing the body filler to stay in the holes until it sets.

I skipped a couple of steps here, just to show a little quicker progress. Here are the brackets with the holes filled and the first couple coats of primer sprayed.

Next I'll smear on a thin coat of spot putty to fill in some minor imperfections. After smoothing that out I'll apply the last couple coats of primer and prep for molding. I'll do the molds for the brackets at the same time as the tail, so hopefully in the next 2 weeks.

Tip- close observers will notice some minor fish eyes in the white primer. This is due to surface contamination, and improper cleaning prep prior to painting. If you are painting something that will be visable, proper preparation is an absolute must to avoid defects like this B)
