Was on my KZ650 after letting it sit for 2 weeks.

Was on the highway here in NYC and turned on the lights as it was getting dark.

Bike went along fine and then stopped. I still had power but when I tried to use the starter button, I got nothing. Didnt even try to engage. A completely dead button. But I DID notice the red OIL button, or Power button, or whatever, in between the speedo and tach, seemed to blink when I did this, or go dim.

Embarassing, as had to walk the bike a 1/2 mile off the highway. Pulled over, kicked it, and the bike started. Rode it for a for more miles and purposely turned it off as I wanted to test the starter. Pressed the starter button and it started right up.

Does this sound like a bad battery, because Ive had battery issues with this bike before.

Also. SOMETIMES, coming off a light, when I roll the throttle, the bikes hesitates, then seems to jerk backward, or jolt (not sure how to explain it) and then its fine. This only happens sometimes. but more than I would like. What do you think it could be? Carbs were just cleaned COMPLETELY etc.

You might want to check the charging system: check voltage across the battery with engine running 5000 rpm. You should see from 14-14.5 volts.

I agree with Nessism, but also check with your headlights on. You mentioned that you were riding with your lights on before you stopped - if your charging system is on its way out, it can run but slowly drain the battery with the headlight on.

What aspects of the charging system would die over time? I have Dyna S ignition system too. Could it be a bad battery?

Dyna S takes more power. Check what your charging system is doing as to what Ed suggested.

Just checked. Battery at rest is 12.5v

At 1500 RPM multimeter read 13.8v

At 14 it gets up to 15v and change

Strangely, at 5k RPMS it goes down to 12.2v when revving

Ive also seen it get high as 16v.

Stator? Rectifier Regulator issue?

Reminder that I have Dyna S ignition.

Dyna S has nothing to do with those numbers.

Sounds like a rectifier and/or regulator problem. The fact that the voltage goes up to 15V+ (which is too high) suggests that the generator is making power. I'm not familiar with your particular bike and whether or not it's one phase or three. If it's three I'd find a SH775 R/R and hook it up. For a one phase system bike I'm not sure.

Thanks for responding. Ricks Motorsports sells a Stock-ish replacement which I bought for $100. Its FREEZING in NYC at the moment, so I'll probably put it in over the weekend. Its plug and play so should be easy depending on location. Ive changed rotor, stator, and reg/rec on my Honda so this shouldnt be a problem.
