Help tuning the carbs
08 Aug 2018 08:54 - 08 Aug 2018 11:58
Hello, I bought a non-working cafe racer from craigslist, the electrical system was shorted and the guy tried fixing it himself, however, he couldn't get it to work.
After re-wiring the whole system the, all the electrical system works correctly besides the clutch lever. I know this because to start the engine you usually have to hold in the clutch to start it. But for me, I do not need to hold in the clutch and if I do the starter doesn't get power.
Other important information about the bike.
-The frame is kz650 1977
-The engine is kz750 EE 1982
-The electrical harness is from kz550 1982
-New ignition coils and wires and spark plug
-The petcock still needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
-The bike has gay pod filters on it
-The carbs are from the kz650
Okay, so during the cleaning process of the carbs I noticed on one of the bolts broke for the lever throttle. So, I will most likely need to do a carb sync
later.
So, I got the bike running well for a short time. However, the pilot screw needed to be turned 4 times, I know that is a lot, way too much. But bike runs well while it's not idling. The person who owned the bike last didn't touch the carbs, so all the sizes that are in the carburetors right now are correct,
So, after warming up the engine, I noticed that there is a vacuum leak in the carb boots holder. Now, my problem occurs, After I fixed that, the engine will not start over. It really wants to but it doesn't.
What is my next step?
The bike ran very well while riding around the neighborhood.
If you look at the picture, does the distance look good? Or should I increase or decrease it
What should my clearance be for the gap that allows air and gas to exit the carburetor and enter the intake? I think I should start there and by adjusting the pilot screw.

What pilot and main jet do you have?
Pods?
4 to 1 exhaust?

Oh, Ya it does have a 4 to 1 exhaust and 39mm pods.
When I get home to today, I'll make a youtube video explaining my problem and all the details you will need. With all the jet sizes.
Thanks and I should have the video posted by the end of today 8/9/2018

You may want to consider buying a set of carbs that are meant to be used on the KZ750 engine. I may be wrong, but the carbs you show appear to be Mikuni VM22 (22mm) carbs. You can easily check this by looking to see if they have the orifice at the 10:00 position (see image below). If they do they definitely are 22mm carbs that were used on the 1978 KZ650-B2A and the 1978 KZ650-D1A. If they do not have that orifice they are Mikuni VM24 (24mm) carbs. I don’t know how well 22mm carbs will work on a KZ750 engine; to me they seem a bit small for a 750 since they even decreased the horsepower on the KZ650 engine.
Also check to ensure that the pod mounts do not block any of the orifices on the back of the carbs. I’ve read about some that do, and that’s a bad thing. Ed

Make sure the adjustment knob is in the center if its travel. Use a .7mm wire (I used irrigation wire) to make them all the same then adjust the idle down. You have fuel mixture screws. They meter the pilots more precisely than the air screws on my 33's and other VM carbs. Try starting at 1 full turn out, adjust for best idle. If the 750 carbs are CV style I'd use them. More forgiving of altitude changes and better on gas when working properly. THEY DON'T LIKE PODS. :pinch:

Under the Articles tab, you can access links to PDF format factory service manuals. There is one for the 750E. It will tellyouwhat the factory jetting was, and a host of other really important information.

.7mm wire or close to it. The adjuster needs the spring on it. Install the adjuster as I said and set the slides just so they touch the wire on all carbs. (bench sync) Do not rely on old carb holders. Get new ones.
I was asking about the spark plugs on the other bike.
