Ok, I'm no great fan of pods either but, this comparison has not much to do with our bikes. Fuel injection is completely different for a start, also, if using a less restrictive filter on our bikes, there would have to be jetting and possibly needle changes to suit. Now generally, on the street the pods on bikes suck big time due to their top end single focus, amongst other things, {especially with CV carbs}, but in some instances, with the right carb mods, like a dynojet kit and velocity stacks, there can be a fairly big difference, especially when using a quality 4 into 1. Modifying an airbox for more flow can work too... You just don't stick pods on anything and expect instant results.... ;)

What 750 R1 says makes sense too. It all makes sense, depending where your head is at and when its there.
I got so excited about the pod-abandonment project, I had to just go and do it.

Got my spacers in there. Decided to paint the edges with Duplicolor Ceramic engine paint, instead of leaving the raw phenolic to look at.
The center holes lined up perfectly with the intake openings in the head, and somehow it all came together. Ended up using 1/64" fuel-resistant gasket sheet on a roll for $2.50 something from a hardware store automotive dept, and there is plenty left over for another project. Thanks Ed and Steve for the recommendations. I installed one neatly cut piece on the head-side, and a new manifold on the other.

The carb to air box boots shrunk and got a little stiff sitting around since Summer, when I started having a pod-craze.
Will have to address that somehow, maybe the wintergreen solution would bring the boots back to new again.

After it all got together I fired the mutha up, and ran the engine for twenty-thirty minutes or so, with a few revs here and there. Then I shut it down and took the pics below. That spark plug looks pretty good, considering I didn't make any adjustments to the carbs.

Zoom-in! Left click pic...right click, left click-"View Image"...move arrow a little then left click...BOOM! Play til tired, then back out. :)

I wonder what the difference would be if they left the hood open and pointed the filter straight up.
CAIs [cold air intakes ] rarely work because they are still in that box of an engine compartment. B)

Would someone please Dyno a KZ, and settle the issue for good.

Judging by my spark plug pics when employing the air box, it appears the spark plug ceramic insulator color is consistent all over and around, rather than heavier and discolored on one side or another.
Could be the fuel/air mixture gets more evenly distributed into the cylinders for the burn with the air box, versus entering as an inconsistent and rushed-through spatter-mix with the pods.

Do you have pics of your plugs when running individual filters?
Are you saying a plug will be colored differently on one side of the electrode
vs. the other? B)

That's possible due to a more even air/fuel mixture.

Ok, these pics were taken with the RS36 carbs, which I no-longer own. Also, I was using Accel U-groove non-resistor spark plugs (w/resistor caps) in both sets of pics.
