Would someone please Dyno a KZ, and settle the issue for good.  .

A couple of guys delved into this a few years ago over on the ZRXOA discussion board. No, a ZRX is not identical to a KZ, but you get what you pay for
Based on my not perfect recollection, the engine had stock internals and an after market exhaust. They tried the stock air box and filter, a slightly modified air box and K&N filter, and K&N pods. They rejeted between pulls to optimize for the changes. The modified box made the best power, pods second, and stock last. This does not take into account the turbulence of a 150mph blast through the neighborhood, or many other real world variables.
YMMV

"making more power" can be deceptive when talking street, pods, if jetted well, will tend to make more power at the top of the rev range {if any at all}, not much use for the street, then factor in rain, cross winds, turbulence... Pods + velocity stacks will always be better than just pods by themselves... A well set up airbox with stacks is the winner though....

Ok, these pics were taken with the RS36 carbs, which I no-longer own. Also, I was using Accel U-groove non-resistor spark plugs (w/resistor caps) in both sets of pics.

5/21/16 with the air box:

Why is there more carbon build up around the bottom of the 2 outside plugs?
And more even build up in the bottom 2 pics?

I don't know the answer to that. Could the carbon buildup be attributable to having the fuel mixture too rich, or because I was using RS36 carbs which a couple members suggested were too big for my application?
Or could it be from burning oil? I'll go through a quart in 750 miles or so...
I ride a lot with the engine singing around 7 to 8 K on the tach, and figure that causes more oil use than babying along between four and five.
Perhaps I get a little rough with her, but she always begs me for more, and sure loves that revving feeling. :woohoo:

Could be valve guide seals. Next time you have your carbs off stick your finger in the intake ports and see if any oil is on the valve stems.

I didn't think to look in there when I had the manifolds off over the weekend...aargh. But I can see that the piston tops are dry, when peering through the plug holes with a tube light.

Before installing the low (9000) mile head in the Spring of 2015, I had it checked over and the guy touched-up the valves/seats, and installed new Viton seals on the stems at that time.

I've put well over ten thousand miles on it since that top-end, if that say's anything.

Or is it because the design of the air box.
The center 2 cylinders have a straight shot from the air box plenum.
Versus the dog leg for the outside cylinders.
Sport bikes do not have that problem with a perimeter frame.

Considering to enlarge the filter hole, and replacing the stock air filter with a flat-panel type, similar to the one bandied about in the video.
Seems to me like that would create improved balance and less-restricted air flow into the plenum chamber for the air boots to draw from.
Does this make any sense, or am I just chasing my tail?
