What sort of ring compressor are you using?

It is not uncommon to trash a ring the first time.

The manual just said to use your fingers. I think I should mention I didn't replace the rings (of course now I have to though).

With your symptoms replace the valve guide seals.

Wondering while looking for rings and since you have it this far you should pick up a nos base gasket and head gasket...... now would be the time to lap the valves? and replace the guide seals too like mentioned ........ thinking you should hone the cylinder too to seat the new rings also..... what you guys think?

If it stops burning oil, it won't run as rich.

Man, time to slow down a little and stop making mistakes.

Get an OEM base gasket and pull the valves out of the head and replace the guide seals.

Use a 240 grit bottle brush hone, not a straight hone, and deglaze the cylinder.

Enlist the help of someone to assist when installing the cylinder over the piston. Be very careful to push the rings into the grooves in the piston before installing the cylinder down over the piston. I like to use some wood blocks to hold up the cylinder and then turn the crank to slowly push the piston up into the cylinder, as opposed to allowing the cylinder to fall down. It's much safer this way.

I'll have another go at them. I also ordered a new set of rings and an OEM base gasket. Why do you recommend honing the cylinder? My compression was fine previously.

You must hone the cylinder when installing new rings or they won't bed in and seat. 240 grit bottle brush type hone.

Do some research on honing your cylinder. The operation takes literally 3-5 SECONDS, dont be sittting there with the hone running fubaring your cylinder.
