Dumb Question?
03 Aug 2015 17:38
Here goes...crank, crank...crank. What is the best way to assure the quickest start, while cranking an engine with BS34 carburetors?
Sometimes it takes an awful lot of cranking before it starts, if it doesn't fire up right-away.

When cold...yes. But my difficulty is usually after turning the engine off after a ride, and then attempting to start it a short time later, while the motor is still warm.

A friend suggested goosing it a little when turning off the key, to put some extra gas in the cylinder to assist the next start.

Good question...

I realize the whole system is mechanical, but don't understand how it gets the initial fuel shot to start, since there is no fuel pump.
Rotating the throttle before pressing the start switch does nothing, except to open/close the butterfly valves behind the slides...

The vacuum caused by the intake stroke of the cylinders sucks the air/fuel mix in. Unlike fuel injection no fuel pump is needed to squirt fuel in. Ed

I can't believe I'm asking about this  , but...how much and when is the best time to twist the throttle to open the butterfly valves? If I just crank it without touching the throttle, it just crank, crank...cranks. :pinch:

When starting the bike don't touch the throttle until it fires up. Ed

The header has blued a lot since pic was taken in April, apparently due to the head/cam change.
