Personally wouldn't hesitate to fit a "glass" version where it wasn't subject to knocking against something.

For an increased comfort level, could easily enclose the filter in a snug fitting length of clear plastic hose.

Good Luck! :)

Just for the record GPZ550 used 7mm ID fuel line, 1/4" is 6.35mm, 5/16" is 7.93mm, so by all indication, 1/4" would be a little small, but not all that much, 5/16" would be too large by a wider margin.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I don't think they are rubbish. I was just to afraid of putting one between my legs considering a single rubber O ring was the only thing that was keeping my family jewels from being engulfed in flames.....

Ok, in my best Rodney Dangerfield, "I tell ya, no respect". :)

If I have to provide proof, here's the details.
This part of the pipe measures 0.3203" on my Starrett #436.

I have about 7 or 8 of these petcocks and carb racks and they are all about the same size on the pipes. All are KZ550 A (standard), KZ550 C (LTD), and KZ550 D (gpz) bikes.

Just for making me have take the photos, I'm not going to do the math conversions for y'all. ;)

1" = 24.5mm BTW, in case anyone needs a refresher. :P

To sum up, 5/16" fuel hose is basically perfect. If only I could get the non-fuel-injection-reinforced, black rubber fuel line (like what came with the bike). Vinyl lasts about 6 days. Urethane lasts about 6 months.

I know what you mean. Way back when, mine had the original thin walled fuel line. I have never found a place that sells it. I always replace it with the thick reinforced stuff and I have to route the lines in a loop to make room for the filters because the line doesn't turn very well. Fuel line is reinforced to handle fuel pump pressure but bikes don't need that if they feed by gravity.

+1 vinyl is useless, never tried urethane.

If interested, Sudco lists its highest quality fuel hose in size 9/32” (7.5mm) I.D.

SUDCO Gray Fuel Hose with Red Stripe Kitaco brand fuel hose, gray with red stripe. Highest quality fuel hose available. This hose is found on many ATV/motocross/offroad Keihin carburetors. Sold pre-cut foot length or cut to length. Made in Japan.

Here's the link > sudco.com/fuel.html

Fwiw, I often dip end of new fuel line in a cup of boiling water for a few moments just before pressing it onto a fitting. Makes it much easier to adapt a smaller line onto a larger barb.

Good Luck! :)

The one I use with no problems on both my bikes and all my engines under 4L is the NAPA Gold 3011, aka WIX 33011 out of Gastonia NC, and rated at 12 microns. It is such a nice little filter, tucks in easily under your tank, and only requires you to cut 2" out of your fuel line. If it's good enough for the Aston Martin DB-9 Volante,it's good enough for me!

Those are the ones I find to have the problems. They are in the video above. If they work for you, great, but I'm done with them. I've tried them on several bikes, and they fail to prime on all of them. I've noticed they are sold under several brand names, and I've tried most of them.
