I've been posting about this for awhile now, but was working on the bike so I though I'd take a video of what I'm talking about.

I've used these filters for over 10 years. For the last 4 or 5 years I've noticed these filters will not allow any gas to flow if they've been sitting for a few days. They seam to seal up, somehow.

In the video the tank is on "prime", then I switch it to "on" and back to "prime". The cap is open and the tank is about 3/4 full. Still, the gas does not flow until I pressurize the tank slightly with the 2-liter bottle. Then it flows fine. I can also turn it off and back on again and it will still flow.

After a few days, it won't prime by itself again. The filter is about a month old.

Have you tried it with the tube going straight down and not looping back up? That rise makes it harder for the gas to flow and requires a "push" to start the flow like when you get a siphon going.

If it still won't drain with the filter line straight down, chuck the filter. The filter element looks funny to me, I would dump it based on appearance.

The loop is full of air. It doesn't matter what the position is since there is no gas in it. Even without the clear hose, though, it won't flow.

After the initial flow, I turned it off and emptied the hose. When I turn it back on it starts to flow with no problem regardless of the position of the clear hose.

The element is relatively clean after a month and looks almost the same as when I bought it. Thyis probelm actually happens on most paper filters meant for cars.

I wish I could get a 5/16" sintered bronze filter in a clear container, but they are pretty scarce. I've seen some in aluminum containers, but they are a little too big to go where I want it. Most of the small sintered ones in clear containers are 1/4" only.

If anyone has a link to a sintered bronze filter with 5/16" hose connections, please post it.

Ive been running 2 metal 5/16 car filters on my 1105 motor with 29s on it with no problems. I picked up a 78 XT500 Yamaha single and put a 5/16 car paper filter on it. It ran fine around town but after a few miles at 65 would run out of gas. I knew it couldnt be the filter because it was brand new. After numerous hours trying to figure it out I took the filter off and it was fine. It seems to flow plenty of gas but it runs out on the bike. Cant figure it out but it was the problem and the vent was not clogged. Dont know if thats any help but just my experience with them. I picked up a bronze Custom Chrome filter that comes apart thats all aluminum and 5/16 and takes up very little space for my GS1100.

dont use the glass inline filters,i watched my neighbors 37 chevy burn to ground a few years back. :( fire dept told me it was common problem for the glass filters with metal end caps to leak.

Still recovering,some days are better than others.

Those filters are crap. I wasted a lot of time on my bike trying to figure out why I kept running out of gas when the tank was full. After it set for a few minutes enough gas passed through to fill the bowls up. Ride and repeat. Switched to a MC filter with the bronze in it and problem no more.

Actually, I have an old one of those around, but it's for 1/4" hose (the ends are 5/16", but it's too loose in the hose). Also, it turned very yellow and kinda soft.

I could make it work though, but my question is how much can one of those flow? If one will work on a 900 or 1000, I guess it would work on a lowly 550.

If I could get one with ends for 5/16, I'd get one for sure (five actually).

Thanks for the heads up. I also wonder how strong the glass is.

Yeah, it's a shame. They are exactly the size I need and you can get them anywhere. To bad they don't work.
