I have worked on a lot of KZ650/750 fours.

I have blown both head and base gaskets on those engines. I have also seen pistons and cylinders destroyed, but have never seen any crank or rod related issues.

I have seen a sized KZ650 engine, but the crank and rods were just fine. The bottom end on those engines is pretty robust. Crank bearings is the last thing in the world you would check on these engines.

How did your guy come to suspect crank bearing issues? Was there no oil pressure?
Hence why I asked the questions I did ! the OP is saying bottom end but hasn't answered my questions ref symptoms and why he thinks this ? I suspect there is likely to be a lot of wasted money here if he isn't careful !! if there is a noise at the bottom it could also be primary drive etc ????

The primary chain has to be really shagged for it to make any noise or slap, basically needs to be at end of life to do that. Should go +100K miles (+160K KM) before that happens unless its been drag raced every single day of its existence.

The only thing I have seen that would make lower end noise is worn out clutch hub rubbers, that will make noise when running. Will actually clunk like a Harley when dropping it into first gear.

Crank bearings can wear but it would not make any noise. They could make noise if oil pressure was low (worn oil pump) and a bearing was wiped out (scored) by excessive heat generated by low oil pressure at high speed.

Something's not adding up for me. How can someone say an engine is shot without even opening it up? What are the symptoms? Does it smoke? Has it lost power? Is it noisy at idle? Does it knock when accelerating? If it knocks at idle, don't panic, it's normal. If it knocks when accelerating, you could suspect a connecting rod bearing or something like that. If it smokes, it's usually the valve stem seals or the piston rings. As I said, to break the bottom end of a 750, 650, 550, etc., engine, you have to run it without oil. What does this engine do or not do?

Completely agree, these are the same questions I asked. It’s always “cost effective”” to take a measured approach rather than “dive in”

Dave Scirocco hasn't been around since May last year, a while back he was away for nearly a year due to health issues so hope he is ok. There is Callum but he is about 7 hours South of Berlin. If the OP's friends dad is indeed a "Master" mechanic (the Meister status in Germany is about as highly qualified as you can get in any job role and requires a lot of studying) he should be fine.

So on the update we pulled the motor and put a camera in the spark plugs.  No obvious damage but the camera wasnt a camera its the old analoge version. My friends dads old tools. We are looking for a digital version but its the best we had. I was watching the oil and think i got lucky i didnt see any glitter or shiny stuff . This is the first engine pull I have ever done will keep the fourm updated but I have a question . Gaskets and spare parts anyone know a good supplier of the stuff in Germany plus i need a new oil drain plug. I know i can get this on ebay but finding good companys is cool so please. Thanks again.

You still haven’t clarified what the problem was? If it’s bottom end why borescope ?

Honestly he just had it with him. My plan was to get the engine out I kinda think he just wanted to play with it. Its like the sniper scope old school shit really retro but hey his father died recently so maybe that had something to do with it. So this thing didnt mean much in the diagnosis. His father was a cool guy honestly. I had a leaking head gasket and a few other problems so a engine rebuild check was plobably needed anyway .

CMS in the Netherlands is a good source of factory parts, though clearly not in Germany.

I am not a fan of pressure washing anything on a motorcycle, except maybe a bare naked frame. A mild degreaser of some sort, plus a few brushes, and a garden hose will do wonders.

Honestly i know your right abour washing but germany actually has laws against washing your car or bike in private unless in a designated place and i live in an apartment in berlin even getting work space was hard this weekend i could maybe hit it once fast. Really look it up its illegal to wash your car in germany. I am pushed that do it once before i break the motor down  and clear the slim .Bag all holes and electrical.
