The main time needed here is due to being stranded in heavy stop and go traffic.
 I burned down my Kaw due to lack of airflow over the motor at the big car cruise known as The Woodward Dream Cruise. Pistons melted and scuffed the cylinder walls
so a rebuild was needed..This is without a oil cooler installed  but even a oil cooler may not of made the difference because of lack of air moving over the motor,,.
 
Maybe a fan or two would help, keeping air flowing while in stop and go traffic. Like fans on bikes with radiators.

Funny you say that. H-Ds offer a fan as a aftermarket add on for their V twins.   It's refered to as the Parade fan  to maintain airflow at a snails pace for prolong periods. 
But ugly , but I hear it works
Fitting  something big enough to work on a inline 4 like ours would be a challange to say the least

When Craig was using 1200 Bandits for stunt work we had issues with motors dieing (TWO at low speed rolling burnouts, dougnuts etc) we fitted a GSXR SRAD rad fan on the back of the cooler and had no more issues (the bandit is a big cooler to hide it behind though !!)

I don't think our coolers have the mass to make much difference really. I bought a cooler from Ed to fit on my Z1. It came from a KZ750 with high oil pressure so I figured it would work better on our low pressure systems. It's larger than the one I had on it before and I opened the intakes to 1/2" and used 1/2" line and nipples. Even with all that the head got really HOT in 115* weather. I had the sensor in one of the cutouts next to the cam chain tunnel. Living in LA we split traffic all the time and I do on the FWY in heavy traffic. These big fours seem to handle it well in any event.

Been running my Z1s in three states with massive temperature ranges, like California and Florida for example.  I always have oil temp gauges, oil coolers, and oil thermostats.  I've ridden to work in Florida with air temperatures in the low 20s and air temperatures in the mid-90s in the summer.  In the low 20s, the oil thermostat is a "cool" thing to have because I don't even see oil temps above 150 degrees F.  But in traffic in the summer, I've seen oil temps at 255 degrees F. I might put 4" Derale fans behind each oil coolers along with a 190 degree F thermostat to help in stop and go traffic.  In California, I could split lanes but no can do in Florida.

Kawasaki put an oil cooler on the ZG 1000 Concours stock even though it is liquid cooled. The 82' CB 900F and 83' CB 1100F air cooled bikes both came with oil coolers stock.

I've got a GPz oil cooler on my 750.  It's pretty small, so it doesn't block the tach cable, nor overcool the oil, but it's good peace of mind.

I have a Derale on my ‘78 without a thermostat and no issues in early spring, fall Michigan temperatures

" engine oil  needs to be at least 220 degrees F to burn off all the deposits and accumulated water vapor. For every pound of fuel burned in an engine, the combustion process also generates a pound of water! If engine sump temperatures rarely exceed 212 degrees (water's boiling point), the water will mix with sulfur (another combustion byproduct) and create acids that can eventually damage bearings."
If installing an oil cooler, I would also install a thermostatic bypass valve in the 220 - 250F range.
Oh no, now i'm thinking I should install an oil heater for winter riding. Do they make those?
