Optical Rod Indexing.  Any thoughts-opinions regarding efficacy?

Beats locating a proper18mm steel rod, and provided purpose for some old Lego's.

Not at all accurate enough and wouldn't show up any rod twist etc.

Not wanting to "bring things down" but given that you appear to have already made the purchase and it has been welded, are you not "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted"

Agree.  Ignorance is bliss.

If forced, though, McMaster sells 18mm rods. You have to pay attention to straightness, because some are more accurate than others.

McMaster Carr was out of stock last check.
17.99 mm O.D. tube spins around smoothly by hand with no perceived play.

As I understand, a rod is straight if it rolls smoothly on a flat surface without bumping.

Daveo, we are about to jump down a welded crank rabbit hole. The CSR I recently bought had a #1 piston blown, I was hoping I could save the bottom end. I pulled it apart this week and not sure if I’m happy or cursed. The crank is welded. I’m starting the process to find out if a welded crank can be repaired. #1 rod is junk.

I think that crank is toast, and replacement is the only reasonanble option.
Once welded there may be no going back.

Falicon  took mine apart with no extra fees and did the Supercrank thing to it .
Of course this is ancient history. Dont know if anyone today would be willing to do it .
