This engine is either from a 1981 F1 or 1982 F2 model (see the clutch cover and points cover)

www.jarlef.no/Kawasaki/Series/Z/650/Z650F.htm

They dropped the kick start in 1980 and the 1983 models had squared off cam covers just like the 750's. Because it has CV carbs it is most likely from a 1982 F2 model as that was the first year for those carbs.

For the US models Partzilla is showing a kick starter for the 1980 F1.
In the 1981 KZ650 FSM an F2 is an 81 model w VM24 carburetors.
An F3 = 1982 model w BS32s.

It may be a Canadian version (no pollution ports on cam cover) or it could be a Canadian version CSR engine.

Canadian versions are more like Japanese/Euro versions, in fact they were/are directly imported from Japan mostly assembled (98%) and we did not have tighter emissions until the mid 2000's.

I am from Ontario and I have a '82 H CSR motor (see pic in above thread) but that came VM24's. It has the same type of cam cover where the holes are blocked off. It has a Hyvo cam chain with the bigger chain adjuster, 7mm rod bolts (regular is 6mm) and 750 engine cases (upper case can accept 750 liners)

I also have a 1982 KZ750N Spectre motor, it has the squared off cam cover with no pollution ports. Clutch cover is different as well as the points/stator covers.

I believe there are a lot of Canadian bikes in the UK.

B/C/D/E/F/H = YES    A = NO (unless that is a pre-production prototype that nobody has ever seen)

All the models are listed here : www.jarlef.no/Kawasaki/Series/Z/650/z650.htm

NOTICE there is no "A" model listed. In fact that first paragraph said the first model out was the 1977 B1.

Who the hell is working at Kawasaki these days that they don't know the history of the bikes!!!

I don't believe it for a second.
I think most on here would agree to possibly know more about the models than current people working at that company.
I know KZ650 pretty well, I personally have 7 of them, and a couple of KZ1000's so I call bull crap on "A" model.
I told you what I think that engine is, if you want to look for "A" model parts go right ahead :)

Like I said I'm only saying what kawasaki have told me today
I'm waiting on more info from them
I'm sure you are very knowledgeable I'm not disputing that and as for searching for A parts I'm not just trying to find out more info that's all
And as someone said its probably re stamped that's fine I couldn't care less just trying to find out imfo for my own knowledge.

Yes! Zeds came in A,B,C D, E,,F G,H,J, K,L,M etc but that's across the whole model range not Z650's.
Z650's came in B,C,D,F and H only..

The jarlef z650 information should be complete & correct.  I'm pretty sure it's a European site, Norway I believe.

Delete Account??? Don't be silly, if your in the UK you should also be on here : z650.proboards.com/
Then you can get a local ball busting on that serial number :)

This information is free and for the most part correct, no need to go off the deep end because someone else is emphatic about the model they know the most about.

You were SPECIFICALLY asking about a KZ/Z650 engine, so I corrected you on that "A" model incorrect statement from Kawasaki. The KZ "A" model may exist, but not with a 4 cylinder 650cc engine.

You need to stay on here and learn as much as you can. Once you collect 40 years of knowledge on your specific model then you can quit.
