What country are you in? I don't think that number is correct.
Maybe post a pic of the motorcycle & the engine number.
The jarlef z650 site has engine & frame number info.
The engines listed there begin w KZ650BE or KZ650DE. and end w 6 numerical digits.

No Z650 had an A prefix in the engine or frame numbers.
The first 1977 model was KZ650B ,then KZ650C ,KZ650D and the last KZ650F- .
After the engine prefix there were also only six digits in the engine number.
A photo of yours will most likely show that the number has been incorrectly re-stamped..

I don't know, but I guess it could be a replacement from the dealer. But the engine number doesn't seem right to have that many digits, plus the engine number rectangle doesn't have the raised edge around it.
Here's a 750-4 engine. the 650 should be similar.

Those letters and numbers are not Kawasaki font but generic font of the widely available engineering number stamps such as supplied by Micromark etc
It's a neatish job but not at all original.

Re: Engine numbers
20 Oct 2022 08:44I see what you mean ref the stamping, however if this matches the original documentation could this possibly be a "pre-production" bike ahead of a model year change that has been stamped by hand. Many years ago when we as a dealer ordered a replacement engine from VW it came blank and the dealer tech stamped the number into it to match the documentation (I have seen some done well and some shocking) not sure what the value of "matching numbers " is in that instanceThose letters and numbers are not Kawasaki font but generic font of the widely available engineering number stamps such as supplied by Micromark etc
