The problem with the oil light flicking on occurred with early Z1's under hard acceleration that sent all the oil to the back of the pan.  This starved the oil pump, causing the oil light to come on.  KHI modified the pan by adding the fixed gates shown in the photo and the problem was solved.  The swinging gate isn't necessary.

There are several different oil pumps on Z1's and KZ's over the years.  Physically they look the same but early ones had one fewer screw holding it together.

I would not worry too much about the oil pump but you can check it while you're doing the bottom end.  The 900/1000 series of bikes operate at low pressure and high volume.  As long as your oil light remains off while running the pump will be fine.  Just be sure the intake strainer is clean.

KZ650 bikes have a different oil pump that operates at higher (around 36 psi) pressure but lower volume.  But these bikes use journal bearings on the crank, not rollers like their bigger cousins.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I haven't made any progress this weekend as of yet.  Been trying to get some things done around the house.  I tried to get my carbs yesterday, and the guy wasn't there.  Again, typical for the area I live in.  If someone that knew bikes could come down here and open up a shop that had some idea on how to run a business, it would be a gold mine.  I think I'll spend the day cleaning up the pan and other things I've taken off.

Many of us here do rebuilds as a retirement hobby.  I would hate to be responsible for delivering a repair within a certain time frame.  Some of my projects take years!

I gave up on time frames years ago, they build you up for let downs. I've had no choice anyway for the last couple of years, I'm immunosupressed/ compromised and have been trying my hardest to avoid bloody covid, Its made things extremely hard for me to plan for anything , so I'm glad I never set any time frames. It'll be finished when its finished....

Couldn't agree more, I have a few years to go before retirement but have a fairly stressful job. Garage time for me is like "de-compress therapy" so it takes as long as it takes

Several years ago i started collecting all kind of parts, O rings, gaskets, etc for my Z. So i did not lost time to look for all kinds of needed parts. Last year i retired and in november i disassembled the bike and this year februari i assembled it. Bike is now as new but it took me four months and i worked almost every day on it.

I found a machine shop that works on bike parts.  I dropped the head off a week ago Friday, They called me on Tuesday to tell me I had a bad exhaust valve (I was expecting that as it did look fairly rusty,) so I got a new one in yesterday.  I want to see what kind of work he does before I take the "new" block in for honing.  I need to inspect the pistons and rings next and to clean up what's left of the motor.

Well, with me getting the new running bike, this has to go on the back burner for awhile.  I think I'm going to rebuild the motor and store it.  Pretty much the rest will be for sale.  Probably small pieces.  I will keep the body work, though.  I'll post parts for sale as I get them cleaned up.  Can't stand selling ugly, dirty, greasy stuff!
