I have over 160,000 miles on my KZ650 and during that time it's broken one cable, the original OEM one. It snapped at the lever end at around 45,000 miles. It was my fault and I wasn't lubing it as I should have, I replaced it with aftermarket and it's still on the bike but I've taken good care of that one.
And yes Ed the 1000 cc bikes are harder to pull due to the sucky nylon acuator.
The early 650 use the helix actuator which isn't nearly as smooth as the later type ball and ramp type.

Ed, is this the kind I just bought? Looks longer and more complex to me. Shows mine will be here on Saturday.

That looks like the type my 1977 KZ650-C1 has, but I don't know if it will fit properly in a KZ1000. Ed

Which one are you showing in the included diagram. The early “helix” or the better “ball and ramp”?

Looks like they're all the same. This one is even cheaper. I guess we'll see on Saturday.
Just the inner parts.

Your top photo shows a ramp and ball type and the lower down photos show the helix.

The top pic is a helix too. You can see the tabs from the inner retainer.
Fun stuff to assemble. Do not do this when in a hurry, it will no go well. :woohoo:

I suspect they will have that dreaded POP and no clutch issue. I can't tell you how many times it left me stranded on my Honda. Yeah the clutch was easy to pull and when I got my Z1 I missed it. I had the old one laying around thinking I could adapt it but never did.
Hopefully this one will work better and be as dependable as the one I have.
