I hate it when threads are left hanging open so...
Although I wanted to push it into the lake I decided to just push it into the corner while I worked on other projects. Last year I put it back on the table but basically didn't touch it until last month. Of course it wouldn't run again due to the carbs gummed up so off with the tank, cowl and carbs. Cleaned the carbs and pulled the valve cover off to check the timing again. I couldn't see a problem with the cam timing so put it all back together and it still ran like crap.
I was looking at the reed valves for the air suction system and noticed one was fixed open. I was fortunate that someone else had posted a question about ditching the entire thing so after reading the responses followed the advice of everyone and disconnected it.
What a difference. Bike runs awesome now and I am putting miles on it (currently 205) whenever the weather and my schedule allows.
I hope this helps someone else if they are banging their heads against the wall.
