The heels of the points gradually wear away from rubbing against the cam.
And checking the ignition timing is a routine maintenance item.
The piece of felt touching the cam is supposed to contain a lubricant to minimize wear of the point heels.
I use a drop of motor oil. But if desired, there are specialized lubricants available for this particular purpose.
In my experience, the contacts wore out (became pitted), which required replacement of the points before heel wear became an issue.
Good Fortune!

Also, Good information too Patton. But I'm coming to the conclusion that the Heels or Rubbing Blocks are worn. They just don't enable the points to open during the Static Timing Method by moving the plates and F mark lined up. The points Start to Open "After" the F Mark during Clockwise rotation close to either the #2 mark or the #1 mark depending on what set of points your working on.

Unfortunately for this Bike, it has been far from any kind of regular maintenance schedule.
AS I said earlier in my older Posts. Non-running 20 + years and pretty ABUSED ! Probably should of been hauled off for salvage.
Since the bike's original 2-wire points/coils harness was in real bad shape and the points cover was missing along with a cracked points housing. I decided to replace those items.
Ebay had a complete points assembly with harness for little of nothing, so purchased that. Points looked fairly new but I'm sure worn as I'm finding out. Was just try salvage them to use and obviously this is what I'm running into.
About ready to make another with Z1 Enterprises, so adding points and coils to the list. It would of interesting to see if someone was able to measure the Heel or Rubbing Block height on a new or working points set.

As known, the points should start to open just as the F mark aligns with the case mark.
If the points don't open until after the F mark has passed the case mark, the coil is firing too late.
How do the points at hand compare with a new set (especially the heels)?
If not already considered, replacement of the points ignition with a Dyna-S electronic ignition should eliminate all the aggravation now being suffered incident to ignition timing with points and continued maintenance of a points ignition.
Good Fortune!

Patton, I wish I new. I don't have a set of new points to compare with what I have.
Like to invest in a Dyna, just don't have the finances at this time.

This picture is of a brand new set of points.
Just compare what you have with those in the picture.

They look very similar. Are you able to measure the heel height?

Should be easy to see the extent of heel wear by comparing points at hand with the set of new points as shown in the picture.

Maybe the points at hand look more like this illustration where the heels have been removed as if completely worn away. :pinch:
For reference, here's a pic of points heels riding on the cam.

Patton, I don't know if you have these New Points in Hand, but the Heels on the ones that I have measure 5.64mm ( the height of the heel ). The bottom of the heels show signs of wear but I don't think too excessive?
As I said before many times, the Heels of the Points don't have constant contact with the Cam like you mentioned earlier.

Measured with a common plastic household ruler.
Points -- like other parts -- are peculiar to each particular model.
Perhaps the points at hand are not for KZ1000.
Has the bike's engine ever run with the existing ignition?
It's also conceivable that the wrong points cam has been fitted.
Good Fortune!

Are the springs intact so that the points may be manually pushed open and then released whereby the contacts close together?
