Turbo help please? was created by K.D. HART
I'm still getting oil in my turbo system and I can't figure out why?
This is my thread in the projects section
www.kzrider.com/forum/11-projects/591120...-old-turbo-drag-bike
The turbo has been serviced by Mr. Turbo and I just did a compression test last night. I'm getting 110 lbs of compression in each cylinder.
I think pressure is still to high in the engine cases and it's pushing oil back up the turbo return line, but I don't know why?
Jeff Saunders sent me a video clip of his engine with a vented valve cover to relieve pressure. Are other having to do this also?

110lb seems low - although if the engine is cold, it might explain some of this.

My engine has 8:1 pistons. I was getting 135 +/- psi when the engine was first rebuilt.

You may want to run a leak down test - if the engine is fresh, you should expect to see within 5% or better.

Make sure you haven't overfilled the oil.
Make sure the ID of the oil return hose is large enough to move oil out of the oil quickly. From memory mine is 3/8" ID and I made sure the hose didn't have an uphill run.

Where is your oil return dumping the oil back into the cases?

my big block 14 28 turbo 0nly uses the stock vent......no oil /smoking problems  ...... Sounds like a return/drain issue to me.... Pics of the return /drain would help...... the oil return line and fitting are properly sized ,clear ,open ,inside of hose is not separating and not kinked, clogged in any way ..... the drain hose is running down hill from the turbo drain on the bottom of the turbo your drain to the cases.......... you can break the fitting on the drain hose to the case and check that sufficient oil is draining while running (use a catch can and a funnel) ...if not oil will back up and blow past the seal on the intake side of the turbo. :S I know you wrote the turbo was just rebuilt by MR.turbo . keep us posted

Yes, the engine was cold. This engine is supposed to have 0 miles on it.
I pulled all the plugs and opened the throttle all the way before doing a compression test.

I don't have a leak down tester.

Engine is not overfull on oil.

I have a 3/8 return line like yours. (There is around 1/2 inch high spot in my return line), but it's still lower than the turbo and I didn't think it would be a problem.

No kinks or clogs and the hose is 3/8 on the return line. It does NOT run down hill though.
I also have oil going up to the K and N breather on my crack case vent tube in the pic.

I replied to your P.M.
I just don't know where the oil is coming from, but I'm still curious if the pressure building up in the motor is not letting it drain back or blowing oil back into the return line.
I have oil going up to my K and N breather at the end of the crank case vent tube????

drain line routing looks to be ok, thats a first gen oil return into the filler cap . ATP used a kicker adapter later ...should still work
