So I got it running, barely. It runs but there is a spitting noise coming from the carbs like a backfire almost at random intervals. Also whenever I go to give it some throttle it bogs down. What does this mean?

Could be timing too advanced, could also be carb (fuel level) problems or similar.

Agree on a comprehensive top down clean and tune for the fuel system. Flush tank, clean petcock, install new filters, clean and tune carbs.

As the advancer's F mark for 1/4 aligns with the case mark, the contacts on the left-hand points should just begin to open.

Opening of the points is the event that causes the ignition coil to fire.

Forget about the T mark when adjusting the ignition timing.

And remember to set the correct gap before adjusting the timing.

Good Fortune! :)

Hmm I might of used the T mark when adjusting the timing, I will go back and look. If thats not it I will take the carbs off again. Thanks everyone for the help!

So this is embarrassing but I found the problem to the hard starts and high idle, my throttle cable was too tight. Fixed that and now its running great. Thanks everyone, this site has made it possible for me to rebuild a engine for the first time.
