I'm definitely tearing this thing down. Either way it has to be done. Yes, Kano is muy lazy. haha.

Bountyhunter,
This is a KZ1000 Police bike. I have another motor that has good pistons on it. I'm not sure what you mean by rebuilding it. The pistons should just come over. New ring sets I would guess. That's ass/u/mi/ng the cylinder wall isn't scarred to holy hell. This pretty well sucks. I'll have it ripped open in the next few days. I'll update.

Any thoughts if this will fit? or is a good idea? I have a 93, and a 96 motor.

it would be phisically impossible for a large peice of ring to get between the piston and the cylinder with out doing major catastrophic damage to both the cylinder the piston and cylinder head what i'll bet happened is that who ever did the top end job the last time broke a ring on install and didn't get all the peices out does was the motor running before you pulled the pan and if it was smoking badly or not at all? answer these questions before you go ripping it apart.

Well, I'm the one who did the ring install. Which could mean any number of things...I'm not a mechanic, I just play one in my garage. The bike ran for 2 years on that ring job, so I have to guess it wasn't bad. In fact, when I did that ring job, I gained like an extra gear. It was awesome. It did not smoke. The only problem it was having, was a hard time starting. And that was the first sign of trouble at all. Otherwise, this thing was running tits. I completely understand that it must have shredded some things. That's why I'm gonna pull the top end. I mean, after all, it's just some bolts. I figure if the piston is shot, I have another one. If the sleeve is shot, I have another one. My real concern is the bottom end. If any of the sprockets have missing teeth, like my ex.

when you pulled the topend apart the last time is it possible that you hadn't been the first (virgin engine) maybe someone had been in there before you got the bike if it was a two stroke it is possible for a ring to go all over the place but not a four stroke. when you did the engine before did you have apart completly or just the top end.by the way your transmission gears can handle almost anything you can throw at them. that peice of ring would get ground up by them no problem.and the oil pump couldn't pickup so i doubt if it hurt anything.

should work but youll have to bore your top case to clear the sleeves,im with time-boom on this one if you broke something bad enough for chunks of rings to end up in bottem end you would have some serious pounding going on from piston or rod in there.im guessomething got dropped in there previously, definately run the leak down test B)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Ok, so I got in there today, and well, nothing definitive, at least to me. I posted all the pics I took in case someone sees something I don't. I'll inspect the cylinder more tomorrow. I found the other half of the ring still on the piston. The piston looks good and doesn't seem to have any more travel than the others. The only difference I notice is it has less carbon build up, whatever. There's a pic of the metal in the pan. I'm going to inspect that more because I have a suspicion it may not be from the ring. I'll be looking this thing over with a fine tooth comb tomorrow. Just thought I'd post the info now.

The metal looks like a bit of the ring, and well, solder.

Whoa... expected worst damage then this...

What's the head look like (bottom view)?

Also, what is this in the green box (Scarred, nicked, pitted)? Maybe just optical illusion on my part....

I guess it's possible that just a faulty ring but still doesn't answer how the hell it got past the piston down into the crank... Dust and small pieces I get but the bigger ones... ...

Seems you may have gotten lucky... :cheer:
Keep your fingers crossed...

I'm with you, expected a lot of scratches at very least. I've run my fingers over the entire cylinder surface and don't feel anything. Had my neighbor look at it as my peepers laack a little. He said it looks good. I figure maybe a honing, a ring set and call it a day. I am gonna wait a little to see if anyone here has any more thoughts. Seems like the motorcycle gods didn't diarrhea on me after all, just a little sh!t.
