Counter-steering and object permanence are two concepts that no one should be riding until learned and they understand the physics of the machine and your perception.

Alas after 30 years and 200000+ miles, Canada, west coast, east coast, Fla. keys I had a bad wreck, lucky to be alive.

I have no regrets for the time I have had and I remain fascinated by the machines. A time for something else has come. Along with $200K in medical attention. :silly:
Grateful to be among you all.

I still remember a sign in a machine shop years back it said, "Machines Ain't Got No Conscience" Motorcycles are just machines, they only do what you tell them to do. You as the rider control the bike. I have seen most riders get hurt when they think they have mastered the machine they are riding. They think they are invincible!!! Right about then is when that machine is going to step up, and bite them big time. You just got to treat your machine with respect at all times.

I always laugh at sport bike riders who pull up next to me on a brand new GSXR wearing shorts, flip flops, and a tank top. I got no remorse for them when they hit the pavement at speed. When I worked in dealerships, I always recommended the use of helmets, leather, gloves, and boots if you are going to ride a little over the speed limit. I used to tell them, would you jump out of your car at 70MPH!!! Most of them would say Hell No. I tried to explain to them that when you hit the pavement at 70MPH its like landing on a big rotary grinder. The ones that tell you, 'I'm a great rider, and I don't plan on crashing" Those are the ones that are going to have an intimate meeting with the ground.

A rider education program is the first step for new riders. I didn't ride from 2002 to 2015 for health reasons. Before I started riding my bikes I took a rider education class just to refresh myself. Glad I did.

There is a time and a place to ride at high speeds. Doing 90MPH down the road in front of your local drive in hot spot ain't the place to do it. Doing 90MPH or a lot more is for out on the country roads with no side roads, and little kids playing in the street is where I always do my high speed running. Even when a Cop stops you out in the country, they are a lot more forgiving of your excessive speed than they are in the city. Treat them with some respect when you get stopped, and 9 times out of 10 they will let you go, or give you a warning ticket.

Gotten through most of the book Proficient Motorcycling and it's definately got lots of good technical details of the dynamics of whats going on between your crotch and the road and lots of good tips to keep the shiny side up in real world road situations.

Couple of quibbles though, Hough is very big on hauling the beast down with emergency braking and a bit dismissive of swerving. I'm all for the idea of bleeding speed as fast and safe as possible but two scenarios he talks about are two where sometimes you simply can't brake your way out of trouble.

1. Somebody turns left into your path something he admits is a huge cause of accidents and thats true of course. Depending of course what is also coming at you, swerving around the back of the left turner is as dramatic as any other lane change. On a multi lane road you might not have that option but on a two lane road just swing around or haul it up on the left side shoulder and carry on.

2. Animals. My buddy told me this years ago and so far it seems to check out and doesn't matter much if you are riding or driving. Again, if you havent a hope to stop in time, aim to intercept and kill them. Except the biggest and stupidest beasts like cows and moose they are going to get the hell out of your way. Cows and Moose, well you might as well go out in a blaze of glory.

Deer will go out of their way to get in front of you. STUPID. Had one come up a bank, overtake me and cross in front of me on a logging road. BIG RATS.
Had a chick turn left in front of me not long ago. She told them I could have stopped. AT 55 WITH 200'? I went around behind her and she backed into me. :pinch:

OK add deer to large animals like moose and cows still most critters that would fuck up your day like racoons porcupines coyotes etc. even groundhogs are most likely to spin backwards from where they came (they know that way is safe, they just came from it) or power ahead eitherway aiming for them improves the odds, or so the theory goes.

We don't have them around here but my brother told me that Armadillos in the Southern states are bad news.
The hour before it gets dark is bad here in Illinois, it seems everything is coming out of the woods/fields around then.
