I learned to ride off-road on a dual-purpose 250 before getting my license.
Those three years helped me to become a much better road rider. Getting out of shape on gravel or sand on the street is no big deal when you've done it lots of times on purpose.
I didn't get any broken bones but got a few good scars and a couple of dents. There was this one time where a ditch jumped out in front of me... :lol:

I'm not sure if it would have been better or worse if it had fallen on you. :lol: On one hand, potentially more damage to you; OTOH potentially less damage to the bike.
After joking with my brother that I would throw myself under his bike as a cushion if something should happen, I went out and dropped the bike on my foot. The bike was fine but the foot was not.
