Welcome.
The bracket shall go on top of the mounting plate in the fairing and then be bolted through.

Here at the Swedish Gpz750R1 contigent we try to keep it up.
Me and two of my buddies has got one each.
Tommy’s got my old track bike I had when I was a kid that he has tinkered with for the last 20 years

Erik’s got one that is 100% original.

And, well I have, a sorry looking project.

Does Erik's now have an American fender?

Quick question - my tank has "Kawasaki Racing" in red letters across the silver stripe on my tank. Does anyone know if this means anything or was added by someone? I will take a pic tonight.

A previous owner painted/decaled the tank. KZ750R1's came from the factory in firecracker red and sonic gold...w/stripes...no lettering. :)

So, we are still waiting on the photo of the tank and the fairing. I went back and looked at some fairings I had and I'll bet some of the confusion you have is that you are attempting to mount a 550 fairing on a GPz750.

I will take pics of the fairing. I don't see anything that would indicate it is an aftermarket or from a 550. Guessing the lip is the one thing that will help identify if it is for the 750 or an aftermarket - or from a 550.

One more question - I was inserting the front engine mount bolts and the nut would not snug up to the space where the bolt came through. It looks like there is some type of lip that is stopping the nut from being flush with the hole where the bolt comes through. Same on both sides. Wondering if this is set up this way to lock the nut in place but the problem is it doesn't allow enough room to slide in the nut. Now there is about a 1/2" gap between the nut and where the bolt comes through the engine mounting hole. Is this correct. Here is nut I am talking about.:

The saga continues...

I decided to focus on getting the rest of the vital parts done on this project to try and start this weekend. Last piece was the exhaust. The exhaust studs were delivered Saturday so I decided to finish it up. The header was a pain in the ass to mount. An extra pair of hands would have helped. Anyway, once exhaust was mounted I tried to start. Starter button was stuck so had to take switch housing apart. Once that was done I hit the starter. Kicked over but wouldn't start. Also sounded a little funky - almost like rattling inside motor. Came back every 15 minutes to try and start and would occasionally get a bump. Was about to give up and start diagnostics (fuel, spark, etc.) when it fired up. Sounded really good. Then I noticed a waterfall of oil coming from the right front side of the oil pan. With that much oil flowing out there is obviously an issue with the gasket. Not sure the issue but I will admit I bought a cheap gasket set - I know, that was a dumb ass move. Plus I didn't have a great view of the gasket as it was mounted - had motor on mounts out of frame. Was pretty beat last night but removed exhaust, drained oil and will drop pan today. Ordered a factory gasket to be safe.

Good news it started up and sounded great. Here is pic put together.:

That's a sweet looking R1 you got there. Sorry to hear about your gasket mishap.

Thanks. No big deal. Based on sitting for 6 years I was happy it started. Lot of work and time to get it to this point. I feel that replacing the pan gasket is a minor thing compared to rest of project. Hope to have on road by next weekend.

Looking really good! If you're having problems finding parts, body parts and otherwise, because you are only looking for '82 GPz750/KZ750R1 parts there are several models that use the same or interchangeable parts give or take a year or 2 before and after. The KZ700A, KZ750E, KZ750L and Z750P (aka GT750) all can be used as parts donors for many parts. If you get an instrument cluster from a UK model it goes up to 150 mph. The fairing is the same as the GPz1100 but the not GPz550.

Here's some inspiration. A toe dragging S turn I did while taking a leisurely ride yesterday.

Thanks for the inspiration and model advice. Your bike sounds great. Hope to be on the road by next weekend - weather permitting.

I just dropped the pan and the cheap gasket was torn in the corner where it was leaking. Lesson learned.
