I think the thinner 530 sprocket could cause clearance issues with the case, which is why I was wondering about shims, and that does seem to be the best practice.

That's great info. I'm leaning towards a stock equivalent for a few reasons, one of which is ease of replacement down the road. The bike is going to Switzerland when it's finished and the soon-to-be owner is a madman (Hi Pius!) but the top speeds aren't very high - it's all mountain and 2-lane work and the highways are monitored pretty energetically. 5th gear won't get much of a workout.

Re your sprocket, are you just looking for a bright zinc finish? Have you ruled out a local plater to do that for you?

I thought about that, using a plater, but it's just an extra step, when just buying what you want would be easier if such a thing still exists. It seems at one time plated rear sprockets were the norm. If I can't find one I may just stick with a 630 chain for simplicity.

What size are your rear sprocket and rear wheel? I'm tempted to do a 15/33 equivalent with the 1" rear, but don't want to over gear especially as I'm at altitude, although I do have the 1075 kit which might restore some of the grunt.

I made a decision on chain and sprockets. I managed to locate a 530 40T plated rear sprocket on ebay, I ordered a 18T front and spacer washers from Z1 Ent. and am working on a chain, I have a "best offer" bid on an 110 link EK530 Xring chain. If I'd gone with just the O ring gold EK chain, the whole setup would have been $109 including all the shipping, with the X ring, I'm hoping to be at $126. They have some DID O ring 630 chains on ebay with plated sprockets as a set for $150 including shipping which are a decent buy, I was close to going for that when I found the sprocket I was after in 530. 18/40 is equivalent to 15/33, but my thinking is I'll try that, if it's too high I can go to a 17T front which is equivalent to 15/35. For another $15 or so I could have both choices available depending on the sort of riding I'm doing, and could swap back and forth. As gearing is something you really need to try for yourself on your particular machine. this was the best way of hedging my bets IMO. I could have gone 15/35 with a 630 and then gone to a 16T front, 16/35 is close to 15/33, but couldn't see any 16T 630 sprockets for sale. I wouldn't want to a 14T front as I feel that's too small, but 14/33 is pretty much 15/35. Overall it seems 530 gives the best sprocket combinations and in my case was quite a bit cheaper. Hopefully it will all fit and line up . . . .otherwise that 630 kit will suddenly look excellent value :)

I stand corrected on the 16 tooth, I don't know how they evaded my search - too late now I'm committed to the 530 route :) Anyhow the cost saving justifies the change for me at this stage. in addition to any other advantages there may be. It will be interesting to see how the 18/40 combo works or whether I'll be wanting to go lower as you are considering. Where I live there are a lot of roads with either no corners, or a long way between them, so being able to cruise at 70 or so in a relaxed fashion is desirable. We have a lot of freeway that has an 80mph limit the rest has been recently increased to 70 mph, so if you intend to go on the freeway you need to be able to cruise at at least 75 on the sections with the 70 limits or you'll be run over, the 80 mph sections tend to be more out in the sticks so usually there is a lot less traffic so if you don't want to do 80 you have some chance of survival. The downside to high gearing is we do have a lot of steep climbs and of course the power robbing altitude, we'll see - I do know my current 15/35 with a 16" rear is way too under geared.

Well I may be temporarily stuffed trying to convert to 530 - I can't find the parts in stock. Still looking.

Shift forks are in, and so today I will start preparing for the reassembly of the engine. Photos later as I do!

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThese guys in the link below have the stuff for a 530 conversion, I basically supplied them the part #'s and said in my case I wanted a plated rear sprocket - this was their response.

"We do have both JTF513.18 and JTR488.40. I have attached images of both so you can see for yourself.
To match the power of the KZ1000, I would suggest the JT Z1R series 530 chain. The chain is rated up to 1200cc. We have it in either steel or gold finish. If you're looking for another color chain, we have plenty. If you prefer another color let us know and we'll let you know what we have.
With all of that said, here's the pricing:
1. Sprockets and steel finish chain = $110 (with free shipping in all 50 states)
2. Sprockets and gold finish chain = $125 (also with free shipping)"

By this time I'd already ordered sprockets, but I did think I'd try a JT chain and ordered one, after all they make great sprockets so why not a great chain? - we'll see, it is an X ring too. I do like the fact the chain has a tensile strength of 10,694lbs, it's reassuring if nothing else.,

Here's the link to the chain, you can message them to get what you want. If you don't like the JT chain or whatever they have others, they were the ones selling the DID 630 chain sets for $150 including shipping,



JT's site, they show the ZIR chains as being pretty much unlimited in the size of engine etc.
