Thanks for the kind words boys and girls .They are appreciaited.Im well over the deadline on this workshop and things have been going so slowly with the build,mostly due to real life getting in the way. Its good to get such responses to my posts.It really helps balance out the frustrations.
So, a few things have come together the last couple of days. First up,i got the rearsets painted and mounted (on the alu plates I made up a while ago and anosised last week)



Then today,I trimmed back the mounting lugs to pull the plates in closer to the frame so I could get the gearshift rod lined up better

Also,you can see the solution to the gear shift fouling on the sidestand ( I brought it up earlier,somewhere) I cut the tab off the bottom of the shift pedal and rewelded it on the top.This way I could have the joint from the gearshift rod turned around and coming off the top without turning my gear shifting upside down.
(Hope that all makes sense!!) Anyway,i think it looks good,the shifter works and nothing is fouling off the sidestand.
( I also splashed out on a brand new sidestand spring/nut and bolt.)
I put on the exhaust (again). Ive been faffing around with it for ages. I love the Harris,I think it looks fantastic and really fits with the look of the bike. Problem is, the chrome is in pretty shabby condition and it lets the rest of the bike down. I tried polishing it up a bit but that didnt help much. Then I thought ENOUGH!! just get the frigging bike built!!! I can change over the exhaust later,if I want. For now,its a good solid pipe.Bolt it on and MOVE ON!!!!!.
Too much arsing about on this build.


So Where I am at the minute is that Im starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. Hoorah!
Whats left on the to do list;
1; Brakes ( Ive got everything except the pads.Just need to buy them and put it all together)
2; Electrics ( Pretty much figured out,though I need to buy a new battery. Everything needs taken off the table and fixed on the bike)
3; Seat. (Either my girlfriend will get the cover finished or I will take it to a local guy)
4; Paint ( Tank/front mudguard/tailpiece. Not a lot to do but I have to source some decent paint. and decide on the colour!!))
5; Fuel System ( this will be the last thing I do.Strip/clean/rejet/rebuild the carbs, fit airbox,new filter,clean the tank out,rebuild the tap.
5b; Get some fresh oil in the lump,fresh fuel in the tank and start it up.

No,There was a really clean one on ebay but I got gazumped at the last minute. This one was from a guy from the Z1OC in England. Its a good pipe,very solid with no rot but the chrome is pitted in places and a bit scruffy. On any other bike,no problem but with all the time and energy (and money) ive spent on cleaning/polishing/powdercoating/painting/anodising this bike, I think it lets it down a bit. Ideally,I would love to have it stripped and ceramic coated ( I always hoped for a black pipe) or even rechromed,but Ive not had any luck finding somewhere to do it.So it stays as is for now and either ill get it refinished or find a nice replacement further down the line.
A Motogpwerks pipe would do me nicely and I was looking for prices the other day,which led to........

Anyway,time and economic considerations dictate that I go with the Harris as is.

What a strange concept. Whingeing about having to make do with a genuine 1980s Harris 4into1 in solid condition (and with a race baffle)!!!!

I need to get out more!

I just went back to the beginning of your thread and whoa has your bike come a long way man!

Yeah, no whining about having cool toys the rest of us are salivating over :laugh: I'm sure if you really must get rid of that pipe, there's several mailing addresses here in the USA that would be happy to see it ;)

Thanks boys. Wrenchmonkey,you deserve a medal for going back through the whole thread. Its a long time since Ive done that.Though,youre right ,a big difference twixt then and now. Im looking forward to posting some before/after photos when its all finished.
Anyway,its been a pretty productive weekend. Today I got the brake calipers rebuilt and fitted.A real pleasure opening all the packets Ive had sitting in boxes for months Rebuild kits fore and aft.Stainless pistons throughout.Sweet!

Being me though,I cant find any of the M/C internals and I didnt order rebuild kits! So, Ill do that now and hopefully have them before the weekend. Then I can get the first juices flowing through the bike and get the brakes bled.
I also made a start on the spaghetti

I still have to order a crimp tool to fit the bullet connectors.Ill do that this week as well.
So,all in all,Im happy with how things are going because they are going,which is the main thing.

Nice work David! I think we've talked about this previously - just so long as you can take one step each day, no matter how little or insignificant it may seem at the time, eventually they all compile into a job well done and you are certainly doing a great job man!
I love looking at all the goodies spread out on the bench. Makes me feel like Golum, greedily rubbing my hands together at the sight of the ring he covets so. :laugh:

Your build has given me encouragement to tackle my 1k-CSR with an eye toward more than the stock resto as I always have done in the past. I really like how much the attitude of the bike changes with the custom work you're doing.

you could always bead blast and paint the harris pipe.

i painted the kerker on my 80 z1r and have been pleased with the result.

I have access to a blast cabinet with glass bead media ( I think) I tried blasting the startermotor cover and the headlight bowl but I wasnt able to strip the chrome off it, just rough it up enough for powdercoating. Not sure that I would trust it to give enough key for regular ( HT) paint on the exhaust. On top of that,once I put it in the cabinet,theres no going back.Blasted is blasted.If I cant get a good finish,its buggered!
