This is what I started with in the fall of 2013.

This is where I am now. The engine is actually out now and the frame is completely stripped and ready to be sent out for powder coating.

Is there any way to protect or temporarily remove the VIN label on the neck of the frame? Ed

I've never tried myself, but I'd guess you'd hafta remove it. I'm sure it's tricky.

I might wire tie a light gauge tin plate over it during the blasting process.

On the powder coating you can use the heat tape the powder coaters use to cover it.

The only problem I see is the temp the powder coat is taken to....300+ degrees. I would guess the frame might get this hot. If its a sticker, at 300 degrees.....might disturb it? yes.

Was just thinking....dangerous for me. might try to heat up the inside of the steering neck, might activate the glue a bit making it easier to remove. Could also burn it up if to much heat?

I've seen folks mention buying reproductions of these stickers with all of the correct info. Using a good reproduction seems much easier than working hard to refinish every inch of the frame except that little bit under the factory sticker. :)

I dug up this post that has a link to someone who makes reproductions:

Hey, I have a frame and pile of pieces that looks just like that! :)

Your Z1-R looked pretty clean before you started. What inspired you to tear it all down?

And what exhaust is that? Looks sweet. Oh, and nice garage!

I did a restore on a 78 KZ1000 LTD, and I used the services of Brian Daliner in Kitchener,Ontario. He made me take digital pictures of the decal on the neck of the frame, and with proof of ownership he was able to make me an exact replica. Before you go any further I recommend you give Brian a call.

I

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.
