most of these bikes that got ridden in the 70's-80's-90's-2000's by folks who were not total dumbos got switched around a lot ...my buddies and i swapped...bought...salvaged from dorks ...parts and whole bikes...switched the good parts and sold the the leftovers in a whole running bike or just got enough from a donner to upgrade a few years....junk yard crash jobs/ebay....until half these bikes now(that were rode for 30+ yrs) are made up of about ten different bikes from items as small as foot pegs/speedos.....to whole frame swap outs...

kz-ltd-z1-classic-MKII-Z-1R....just letters....pound for pound it's all the same bike....

you got a good pile of stuff and the holes all line up enough to go on ....at your current pace you are gonna have a nice build for sure

pics as you go....decent bike i still say...might keep an eye on folks trying to sweet talk you outta those carbs :P

Made a little progress tonight. Sectioned the frame where it was broken. Turned a plug on the lathe. Pried the frame apart and voila, ready to weld. Haven't decided if I'm going to cross drill and weld this plug as well since I'm planing to brace the down tubes anyways. I'm toying with welding it myself with my MIG as I go, or just tacking the plug and braces and taking it to a friend to borrow his TIG. Not like you'll see most of the welds anyways.

as someone who tig welds i don't like for people to mig tack something and bring it to me to tig weld.
because even over night it flash rusts.which cannot be cleaned out of the inside and back side of the weld area if it is tacked.it has to be broke apart cleaned tacked and then welded.adding work and generally p!$$ing off the welder.
most people don't clean the inside and outside of the weld areas as good as i need them to be,to create nice clean non-porous welds.
so if you are going to tig it(or have it tigged)fit it all up and de burr it.then go to the tig and tack and weld out all at the same time.

that is my .02 fwiw,

leon

p.s. welcome,cool project.

hey does the LTD have the same frame as the standard A model? Maybe all they changed was the rear wheel? and styling of course...

good luck on your project

Frame fixed. Drilled crosswize holes with a center drill into the plug for a little extra security. Need to do a little more sanding. Noticed a couple areas that need attention after I primed it and went around it with a straight edge. Hard to see it on shiny metal, and bad eyes, and dark shop, and the dog was barking, and.

Put one layer/side of an old t shirt between your hand and the metal and rub your hand across it,magnifys every little bad spot. B)

Good work on the frame.

If I were you I would get with Patton and check to see if and what parts were on the bike that could be LTD parts. If it has 76 LTD parts some of them were made only one year. I am talking about the wheels. 76 wheels have only one mark on them and it is by the valve stem. A 76 has a rear sprocket carrier that is a once only and the sprocket is diffrent.

I am trying to find a 38 inch speedo cable for a 76 lTD. They are four inches longer than a A model because of the caliper on the left side. Roy

Perhaps one of these?
motors.shop.ebay.com/eBay-Motors-/6000/i...90.m570.l1313&_rdc=1

kawasaki.com says SPEEDO CABLE Part No. 54001-1010 is common to these 6 models:
KZ1000-A3 (KZ1000) (1979)
KZ1000-A3A (KZ1000) (1979)
KZ1000-A4 (KZ1000) (1980)
KZ1000-B3 (KZ1000 LTD) (1979)
KZ1000-B4 (LTD) (1980)
KZ900-B1 (LTD) (1976)

Z1E's current listing @ $12.49 shows out of stock and no back orders allowed.
Wondering about exactly what that means, and whether Z1E might expect to sometime later be able to again stock the 1976 KZ900 LTD speedo cable?

Good Fortune! :)

Wireman, I'll give that a try.

BlackBanshee, I couldn't wait to take it to a Tig welder (wish I had my own). I heeded your advise nonetheless.
