All the 1976 KZ900LTD frames were manufactured at Kawasaki's USA factory in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The bike at hand seems to have a 1977 or later KZ1000 frame with VIN label from a 1976 KZ900-A4 frame manufactured in Japan.
Zedder has a nice pic of the 1976 KZ900LTD:

Somebody used master cylinder mount off differant frame possibly,Id put my money on somebody cut the steering head and part of frame tubes off a 900 frame with a title and butt welded it together onto a kz1000 frame without a title, that would explain the busted frame tube where they welded it together and ground it down to hide it.Haybus wrote: That's wierd. The mount in the picture looks like an after thought. I just looked at the mount behind the side cover and it looks OEM.
something like that should always be slugged with a piece of tubing inside the frame tubes and plug welded before butt welding origional tubes to tie them together .
Can you remove gas tank and post picture of backbone tubes on top of frame?
Whats the numbers on engine cases?

Does it look like the head was changed?
The frame break is a long ways aways from the head.

Here's a shot of the master cylinder mount.

As far as I can tell the fork legs are not bent. Step blocks affixed to the legs above and below the lower clamp, straight edge on blocks shows no gaps. Maybe the camera was playing tricks. But who cares, they're being tossed anyways. It's all coming apart right now. If you would like any other pics of this two wheel abortion let me know. If you know anyone who could make use of any parts (fenders, wheels, forks, swing arm, seat, etc.) let me know.

This is a 77 kz900 frame Ive got sitting in my basement, theyre actually left over 76s that kawasaki unloaded as early 77s in my book anyway.
Anyway the frame is the same as a 76 kz900a series bike, notice no master cylinder mount they used a drum rear brake on the regular a series kz bikes till the 77 kz1000 came out in mid year of 76.
So somebody did a little modifying somewhere in its past

However, the master cylinder mount doesn't look like a factory weld.

I was getting ready to take the tail off and noticed a rubber pull. Hey, there's a document tray under the tail!!!! Replete with original 1976 KZ900 LTD owners manual with the original guys name written in, then scratched out.
I know, frame number doesn't match 76 LTD. It's a Frankensaki.
