79 Z1000 ST "PROJECT NEW/OLDSKOOL"
12 Jul 2012 20:35 - 04 Jan 2014 12:31
Hey guys, i have been floating round this forum for a while, i have a build thread going on "ASF" and "Custom fighters" but being a old Z1000 i thought i had better get on up here!
Im pretty laid back and open to feedback if ya like it tell me, if ya hate it tell me!
this one is going to be a long term project and with our first baby due on 4 months
i rekon that will put a hold on the build too, so im sorta just collecting parts at the moment and doing my homework...
Ok here we go again "PROJECT NEW/OLDSKOOL"
Going to be a mix of new and old, starting out with a 1979 Z1000 ST frame
She'll be getting new running gear new wheels under tail exhaust and something Kawasaki air cooled with way too much power!
......Turbo I hear u all asking??????
This is the (BAD) photoshop concept pic i have made:
So we have already:
-The Z1000 ST frame
-05 ZX636 forks
-06 Z1000 triples
-06 GIXXER 1000 4pot radial mount calipers
-Twin 320mm Brembo rotors
-2010 R1 swingarm
-2010 R1 shock and linkage
-2010 R1 rear caliper and carrier hanger
-and IMO the signature of this build... black Ducati sport classic wheels
2005 ZX636 forks on 2006 Z1000 triples:
2006 GIXXER 4 pot radials:
some nice Aprilia 320mm rotors:
here is the rotors mounter in the Ducati hub:
and one with the calipers mounted:
at the rear ive got the 2009 R1 underbraced swinger:
the frame and swinger mocked up:
and these would have to be the signature of the build!!!
I love it already

Do you know by chance the swingarm pivot width on the inside of the frame? I love the wire wheels! Stainless spokes on black excel rims look bad ass to me. No frame or swingarm mods to make things fit?

im not 100% on the inside measurment but my R1 swinger is 263mm and has about 30mm each side, thats why i went for the ST frame:
i know i need to have a 365mm piviot bolt made to bolt it in there, and just the usual matching axles and bearing sizes, im runnung a ZX6 axle and using the standard Ducati wheel bearings, but i need to make bome bushes as the R1 axle was 28mm.
and of corse a mount for the monoshock and some frmame bracing to go in.
my only issue with the Ducati wheels is with spoke clerance, my Z1000 triples are
210mm fork width, i think some of the GIXXER's have 214mm which would be great, as im going to have to mill a bit off the back of my calipers to clear the spokes.

Wow! I had no idea ST frames were that much wider at the pivot than a standard kz frame.

I had a bit of a play with the linkage today, trying to figure out if it will work with YAMMYS new system where the dogbone bolts to the swinger not the frame:
I'm sure with some playing it will be fine.
And thought I'd throw the forks in place just to keep me inspired

Will be interesting to follow this build! But is it just me, or does the frame appear twisted in the overhead shot? I cannot get the swingarmpivot to line up with the underseat bar.

Yeah it does look all cocked up, but the frame is straight, it has a screwdriver holding the swinger in there, no wheel spacers to center the wheel and the only axle I had lying around at the time was too small too.o

About time you joined in. Your build is just to cool to keep to yourself. Just so you know, I've been hunting like crazy for a set of those wheels, I've got stock KZ hubs to do spokes but those hubs are just pure porn!

Haha thanks mate, yeah the wheels are hard as hell to find. When I was doing my homework I looked at KZ and GS hubs
But they all required huge spacers to space the disks out to Fit modern forks, the Ducati hub disk spacing is 130mm
So I only need 5mm spacers for the ZX636 forks in the Z1000 triples
