how about a picture of those braced cases when you find your camera?

Everything seems to take longer than you think it will! Hey it's only been 3 months between posts, lost cameras, lost USB cables but I'm back. With pictures...
Plummen, here's those cases. 80 G model Custom, like MKll but different...big main webs but 17 fins on lower case half. All my other MKll motors have 13.
Taped up ready to paint black like a good MKll.Borrowed a friend's painting covers which save a ton of prep time.
Found 8 7mm.stem X 1.65" Ti valves on ebay from RCR for about $25. Compare to $100 per,NASCAR guys replace valvetrains constantly.I also bought another 8 for the same price, just in case.
84 GPZ crank. MKll 16 th.centrepin,Falicon thrust bearing, indexed & welded.
84 GPZ cylinder head by FBG. 42mm. intake,34mm. exhaust.
Exhaust
Intake
Dual plug
Wiseco 1500 piston. These come unfinished with no valve pockets and a 45* dome and are then massaged to fit your cylinder head.
Found the last pieces of my puzzle- a set of WebCam 500-470 cams. Now the engine builder can finish cutting the stems and keeper grooves.
That's it for now...

Damn, you're going for some big power Jake! Fwiw, you were right about my cases. I measured the main web thickness and it is .6". I have the mkII cases, but not a mkII engine.........?

I never saw this thread until tonight. Guess I should look at the projects thread more often
Couple of things that I'm curious about.
1 - There was mention that the previous cam chaink kinked. How did that happen?
2- Looks to me like every buckt in this photo has been riding the retainers. You already know that's not a good scenario.
The retainers needed to be shortened up by the look of things. Not fun and it takes time for sure but I've had to shorten up a lot of them to prevent contact with the buckets.
Is the mystery mangled part a cam chain guide from the main cap?
BEAUTIFUL BIKE!!! BTW

Larry, never did figure out what the camchain problem was,the kinked one is still hanging on the wall in the garage - never seen one do that before! The second problem unit just plain broke, found the offending link. As far as the retainers, the contact was after the chain broke. They were machined for clearance to the buckets and the new ones will be as well.
All new buckets, retainers, valves, valve springs, top conversion roller, adjuster roller, camchain, crank, cases etc. You know the drill.
Mystery part -not a main cap guide, the one in the old motor was one one of Schnitz' delrin plastic pieces.

jack,
how do the ti valves hold up for you?does it seem like you get good life outta them(for what you do)?
just curious,as i do a bunch of single cylinder four stroke heads and the ti valves are always cupped out in the valve contact faces.unless the customer just insists on ti valves i usually try to get them to put stainless kibblewhite valves back.
i love ti retainers but the valves don't seem to last.that is my experience anyway.
can't wait to see this monster back together .
that head looks like it not only had a good massage, but a "happy ending" as well  .

Porchev, good to hear about your cases being MKll.What does the tranny cover look like? Z1 or J model style ? 2 guesses as to why a 78 would have MKll cases- either the originals were replaced due to mishap/breakage or your bike was built late in 78 and that's what was in inventory.Dunno...just guessing.
Leon, only used Ti valves in dragbike engines & have no experience with singles or anything besides 8v Kawasaki's. I've had good luck with Ti valves and know 42mm. stainless intakes will not work. Too heavy - seen it done.Once.Lasted less than 10 passes.

i see what you are sayin.
42mm is a big valve(for bike motors) ,and stainless is heavy.

I see u are using a 84gpz crank. ive never seen 1 before. i like the lobes, it looks light, like a z1 pork chop, are they?
did u have to change the rods or just get a custom pin size, and pin placement for the pistons?
nice goodies u have there Jack.:woohoo:

Mark. The 84 GPZ crank is touted as one of the best of KZ cranks, this is my second one - change 'em out at 200 passes for peace of mind. The GPZ hy-vo camchain centrepin is changed to a MKll 16t.peanut camchain unit.
Stock GPZ rods have 18mm. pins & you must deck the block to run it in MKll cases as they are shorter than Z1/KZ by.030-.040 or so. Pistons are designed for 83-84 GPZ heads only to get pin height correct, domes are 45* blanks which are then machined for your head's combustion chambers / valve size.
