Do you mean that you´ll just swap stems/axel? You will need triple-trees to fit busa forks so I´d machine down the axel. I´m doing the same thing right now (my bike is originally Z1000R2 ´83), swappin the old ZXR750 -forks to GSXR USD-forks and SKF for example don´t have bearings with inner diameter 30mm and outer 52. The smallest outside diam is 55 if the inner is 30mm. Check this first to avoid extra work/cost.

I mean to press out the two stems, and use the original Kawa stem on the Hayabusa triple tree.
And since the Kawa stem is 28mm, and the Hayabusa is 30mm i need to built (weld) up the Kawa stem where it are supposed to fit in the Hayabusa triple tree. And then machine it to the Hayabusa measurements only where it fits in the triple tree.
So the original Kawa bearings will still fit.
Isn't this the easiest way to go than?

Do you have any pictures of your bike? Always interesting to have a look at similar solutions. :)

really it is probably a better idea to build a sleeve that you can press over the kz stem and weld it to the kz stem so that you can then press it into the busa lower tripple tree.you savy?

we put a katana frontend on my buddies kz1000.i machined the weld off of the bottom of the kz stem and pressed it out.then i chucked the katana stem up in the lathe and counterbored the katana stem to be the right pressfit for the kz stem,then cut the katana stem off with a bandsaw right above the top off the bottom tree.which in turn left the outside of the kat stem in the tree to be used as a bushing.then i just pressed the kz stem in and welded the bottom of the stem back to the bushing i left in.i had to mill the upper tripple clamp for the kat so it would go on the top of the kz stem and bolt down.then the whole frontend was "bolt on deal" :P

I guess I misread/misunderstood, sorry. Of course it can be done both ways. I personally just want to save all original part of my ELR for future restoration. This is why I preferr chopping/modding doner parts. And sorry, no pics of the new front project yet.

A sleeve sounds better then welding yes, I hope to speak to a machinist today.

I got 2 more of the triple trees, so its no big deal.
But I agree on the original thing, to swap over at any time and the bike is original again.

Today I am starting with some preparing to paint the engine cases, the plan is to use Gun-Kote, after seen what otakar wrote about it.
Gun-Kote will be used on every smaller part on the bike.

I am fetching a oven today, I think it would be a bad idea to use the kitchen stove. :P

I will of course take a lot of pictures.


Cant wait to try this.

yes the missus prolly won't want you bakin parts in the house.i have used my oven to heat up cylinders to install sleeves,and then the wife came home and she was not proud of me at all:angry:.now i use the bbq.do these steaks taste like 2 cycle oil? :whistle:

Yeap, definately don´t use the kitchen owen to cure paint. Did that once and the nagging just went on for weeks:whistle: :whistle:

Changing front is like a puzzle. Where to mount instruments, lights...which brake calibers...how to mod and paint mudguard... But I just love itB) This will be the second time, still looking for a ZRX swing arm...

I grow up on a Suzuki GT500, and after that I bought a GT750, so I like 2 cycle oil smell :P .

Even in that time (mid 80s) both of them where old bikes.

Puzzle yes, I like that to.

Last days haven't happen much, I am working with temperature control the oven, for maximum output for the Gun-Kote.

I bought this little device;

To help me to pinpoint exact temperature.
Its a infra red temperature sensor, just point it to the object and than I get the degrees, within 2% i think.

I am also waiting for this one;

A sandblast cabinet. I think this geezer will help me out.

OK, next time I hope I will bring some pictures of fresh painted engine covers!

I used a KZ1100 stem built up with weld and machined to match the GSXR stem and pressed that into the lower triple clamp (more like pounded it in!) If I was to do it again, I would have a sleeve made, simpler.

Thanks for inputs!!!. The pictures will come, yes.

The machinist is working with the stem now, i don't know if its gone be a sleeve or welding., hmm.

OK, i just finished two of the first engine covers, this is a little important, because now I manage to paint every part I want one the bikes, with a high quality heat resistant paint.
The plan is to use Gun-Kote on every minor painted part on the bikes.

OK, lets jump to the pics;


Here is the sandblasting cabinett, I am using ordinary brown sand, 0.1mm-0.7mm.

Airbrush, a cheap little thing, perfect size.





With new paint on, weeeeee.









So, after sandblast, and coating, Iam really satisfied with the texture. Kind of matt. If I did not sandblast and only did it with sandpaper/grinding i would have more gloss i think.


Wrong color in the picture, because of the backlight, didnt use the blitz.


I think i have to check the price for a new "oileye".
Anyone who knows?

So, for the next weeks now, it will be sandblasting and coating for me, all the old rusty parts will be blasted and painted.
