Nice :cheer:
I can see that swing with a nice (gloss?)colour on it :woohoo:
Did you make a jig before you started to weld?
What's new with the bearing?

Its really a nice workshop you got there.

plummen it is the picture.i took a piece of tubing that was thick walled and machined the ends square with the lathe and then bolted the axle plates together.after words you can slide the tubing back and forth and no gaps appear and it stays square.i have measured it repeatedly.
roy, while i do build jigs for swingarms and a-arms if i plan on doing a few.when i started this i did not know what the exact dimansions were going to be.therefore i could not build a jig at first.i just kinda let the shape evolve, because i was putting such a large wheel and tire in there.i also was deadset against any kinda frame modifications at all whatsoever,so the swingarm would have to accommodate all of the bends that were necessary to clear everything.i also have a friend that put a katana swingarm on his kz1000.he had to cut some stuff off his frame to clear the swingarm, and he was telling me that i was going to have to cut some stuff off of my frame.at which point i informed him that i was building my own swingarm and would make it however i had to inorder to clear the frame.which i might add i did.i have a layout table that has a huge chunk of heavy walled rectangular tubing welded to the back.i measure off of the tubing for square, and i have some v-blocks,that i clamp the pivot tube and the tube that i bolted between my axle plates.so that keeps the axle and pivot tube square verticaly and horizontaly.i also measure as i go to see if anything has moved.i have built a few fourwheeler swingarms, those have a 50" wide axle.if you get one of those outta square a little at the swingarm and you extend the line all the way out to 50" you will be way off.when the fourwheeler comes off the line and lifts the frontend they will turn one way or the other if the swingarm is not square.i had a buddy that built some that were not square and you could line up behind the guys off to one side because you knew which way they would go when the light turned green.if i build another swingarm for a kz i will probably use this one to build a jig from.

roy, hopefully i can get to look at the bearing tonight.i finally finished the customer work that was keepin me away from my projects.thanks for the compliment on the shop,it is not the best there is,but it is the best i've got.(or ever had)i am just happy to have enough room to set up all my machines and run them without moving stuff around.someday i will have a really nice shop but i hate to owe people and this one is paid for.i have a ryder(delivery box)off from a truck, that was my "shop"(8'x8'x12')before i converted half of our pole barn into a shop.i still use the ryder box for my engine machine shop.i have my kwik-way boring bars and valve grinding machines in it now,as that is mostly what i do(bore and hone, valve jobs, port and polish).and the box is air-conditioned,the other shop is not.just heated with a wood stove and propane heater.

531blackbanshee, wow, your swingarm is a great approach. I respect your decision to keep the frame 'unaltered'...not a lot of Z1R frames floating around these days. Nice skills with the welder; you are definately a fab-guy...okay, let's "de-gay" that...*ahem!*...you are definately a fabrication wizard (much better!). Ha!

I'm shooting you a PM with a couple links.

Keep the pics comin'!!!

yes, poor r1 the motor and the rear end were all that was salvageable.the frame was bent at the steering neck, the forktubes were collapsed, the front wheel was shattered.pretty hairy stuff.i done a valve job an a mechanic at a local bike shops r1 head, and delivered the head, and he was like oh man i was hoping that you would take longer cause i have a problem.i'm like"oh yea"and he goes i don't have your money.i do a bunch of work for this shop so i'm like okay when can you have it.he says next week,i'm like okay no problem i'll see you then.i call him next week and he goes oh i forgot i owed you and spent the money on a new d.a..i'm gettin a little steamed but the shop he works for is a good customer for many years and i don't want to cause problems.i asked when he would have my money and he says thursday.so i show up thursday and as soon as he see's me he starts diggin in his pocket(the correct response).he pays me and starts askin me about another fuel injected r1 head and is askin me about which head(carb,or injected)would respond best to supercharging.i give him my opinion and ask what he is doing with the rest of the bike.he says he is going to scrap it.at this point i have the money he just paid me,soo i ask him the question.whatcha goin to do with the rear wheel and brake system (that hasn't had a line cracked from the res,to the brembo m/c,to the caliper).he goes sell em.so i bought the rear wheel with a decent shinko tire,cush-drive,axle with sliders and spacers, and the complete brake system for $200.00.so there is the sordid story of how i acquired my r1 rearwheel and brake system.as far as the frontend is concerned it is going to be stock for this summer.i am going to roll it with mismatched front and rear wheels.i will paint the center of the r1 wheel black and leave the edges of the rim silver so when it is rolling they will look like black centered wheels with silver edges.and i am watching for a front end that might work.i have a buddy that has an zx9 that i have been trying to get away from him so i can use that stuff.but with the z1r fairing brackets and dash it makes a frontend conversion a little more difficult to make look right.i don't wont to mod this z1r to far to be able to reverse it as this is the most stock bike i have.i have a 78 z1r i got when i was 15 that i will get alittle more wild with.which is probably where the swinger will end up eventually.and i will return the black z1r to semi stock.

Ah, the two-bike scenario makes a lot of things easier to do, eh? :)

On your 'builder' Z1R: I'm considering frame-mounting my fairing...just a thought.

I'm thinnkin' (and let your 'machinist' blood run amok, here) weld on a bracket to the frame steering head, fab up a bracket with 3 or 4 mount points and go with "dzus" fasteners (geez, did I spell that right???).

Dont' mean to continue to geek (but I've beein thinking about this one for a looooooong time).
I've got a FRP fairing (waaaaay lighter) and I thought that the bracket welded to the frame would be simple and square with 2 or 3 holes drilled thru it. The fairing bracket could be aluminum tubing with flat pieces (for structural support of the fairing itself) welded on where the bracket meets the fairing, drill holes thru the plates and fairing for fasteners.

Just thoughts from a non-welding mo-fo. :)
