i have parts in the garage attic, under both benches in the garage, and some in the basement now.

i'd hate to see the damage a camshaft would do if my wife banged her toe on it under the bed... or me for that matter. 8^)

here's how i figure that out...

stock 900/1000 chainline is 3.625(3 5/8ths)"
636 chainline (appears) to be 4.000"(center of wheel to center of sprocket with cush drive fully inserted into wheel)

4.000"
- 3.625"

---

= 0.375"

.375" = 3/8ths"

so, that is what i'll need to make. just need a little bit of DOM tubing and some time on the lathe.

alright guys i saw it up close and personal again tonight,it looks a lot smaller up close than it does in the pictures.russ wanted me to sit on it but i was afraid i wouldnt want to get off of it if i did!:woohoo:

i think i hit my first big hurdle last night...

those sprockets are HARD!!! my little lathe might not have the chutzpa to cut it. all i was doing last night was burning off little pieces of carbide from my cutting tool, and work hardening my cuts.

gonna do some checking, but i might not have the trick of that right now.

i need bigger tools. 8^)

I believe that I read that the sprockets are "case hardened"(??) you may need to heat them, Im not sure....

yup, that they are.

i read that thread you liked me to over at dragbike.

didn't see where they heated them before turning them down. would make sense tho, as re-heating will anneal the surface, and make it soft again.

did he re-harden the sprocket when he was done?

A couple of ideas:

Try Cermet instead of carbide.

Grind through the case hardening (which is only ~0.010"-0.020" deep or so, normally).

Check the required speeds and feeds for Cermet if you decide to use it.

Are you using indexable or brazed carbide?
I'm fairly certain that Cermet is only available for indexable.

Annealing works with heat treated material, I don't believe it works with case hardened material. Case hardening is a process of adding additional carbon to the metal after it has been finish machined, and I don't think heat will remove the additional carbon.

I reread the dragbike thread. they only said to preheat before welding, so they must have used something different than you to do the machining. it doesnt say anything about rehardening the sprocket afterwards.

1/2", brazed.

i thought about just grinding the teeth down, then hitting that with the lathe.

won't work to cut the center out of the other sprocket tho.

i'll look into cermet, see if it's cost effective to tool up, or just have joe's do it for me. i called and he'll do it for two hours labor, basically 100$.

good info. i wasn't aware that case hardening was a surfacing treatment vs. heat treatment.

that would explain why heating with the welding doesn't affect the surface treatment. 8^)
