Iam in the same boat lol, except...i have a project kz1000p i want to turn into a cafe or a
fighter, problem is space and budged i have done little work to my bike,and very little skill xD

Turboguzzi...took the cylinder to a specialist today and he said now way.
The damage is to deep, needs a new sleev to make it work.

Tusch, I understand...then you dont have much time either to work on it.
I felt the same way when I went to the University....would kill for a project and some time to spend on it. What you can do is to make a really detailed build-plan. Then it´s just down to execution !
There is a whole lot to investigate before you get down to it...specially if you want thingt to run smoothly. I´m glad to have you following this thread

Space is no problem. I saw a guy on KZR that built a bike in the attic...and then moved out to a trailer. That is rock hard stuff ! And the work he did was amazing.
Skill is no problem with the internet...there is allways guys like us to help you out.
If your uncertain make the build in small steps.


Blackbanshee, make a pick...what do you want to see next ? Exhaust, shaft to chain conversion, swing or front end ? They should all be done eventually so...

Space is a small problem when living in a small apartment,

i built 3 different bikes in a small 1 bedroom apartment in the mid 80's on the 3rd floor the only problem i had was getting it back outside after they were finished(didn't fit in the elevator)

I have considered doing my winter tear down in the living room my girl doesnt mind but I cant bring
myself to do it (back in the day had no out building so my sportster was my christmas tree)

Ok guys, next job up is to do the "Shaft to chain conversion".
Check this baby out ! A guy called Bill aka Mustapha dump gave me a detailed description on how to to the job.

This was his words: "Converting the shaftdrive motors to chaindrive is a very simple operation, just swap out the outputshaft for a chaindrive one, and fit the sprocket backplate in place of the bevelbox, and move the gearshift claw mechanism into the second hole and change the spring pin position over to the adjacent threaded hole, job done. Takes a lazy afternoon on the spanners to sort it out."

Engeine before conversion:



Parts needed: (Here from a GPZ 1100 -81)



Split the case:



Remove the gear shift mechanism: (open the claw and pull it out)



Unscrew the spring pin:



Insert the spring pin in the lower hole:



Insert the gear shift mechanism into the lower hole:



Install the new chain drive output shaft:



Install the clutch basket shaft:



Install the back plate:



Install sprocket and clutch cover and Bill´s your uncle

Gave it a shoot on my own and came up with this:

If you dont use the shift drum from a chain drive your going to have a problem. You are going to find your not shifting all the way into gears. Like 4th, it will pop right out while your driving.
I would use everything drum, shift lever and anything elese I could take out of the chain. Been there done that!
The pins behind the end plate on the shift drum are clocked different for a chain motor or shaft. Think about it, you just moved that lever into a spot nearly an inch away. Is it going to travel the same distance at the same starting point as it did in its original spot?
